Swampscott powers its way into loser’s bracket final

Mike Alongi

July 12, 2015 by Mike Alongi

Swampscott continued its torrid offense in a 16-3 victory over Winthrop in the District 16 Little League Tournament Sunday at Reinfuss Field.
It was the fifth straight victory for Swampscott in the all-star tournament.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning. Swampscott added two in the second and then broke the game open with seven runs in the third.
After Swampscott added four more in the fourth and Winthrop failed to respond, the game was called because of the mercy rule.
Cam O?Brien hit another home run and had five RBIs while Alex Greenfield knocked four hits in the win. Anthony Rakauskas also recorded four hits.
Matt McIntire pitched and got the win for Swampscott. After allowing three runs in the first, he held Winthrop scoreless in the second, third, and fourth.
?Timely hitting has been key for us lately,” Swampscott coach Joe Caponigro said. “After dropping that first game, we?ve won five in a row. I think we?re starting to find a good flow.”
Swampscott 15, Pine Hill 5
Against Pine Hill on Saturday, O?Brien hit two home runs and Kyle Marshall hit one as Swampscott cruised to an easy win at Reinfuss Field. Anthony Rakauskas got the win on the mound for Swampscott.
?We got solid pitching and good defense behind it,” said Caponigro. “That?s been part of our formula for success.”
Winthrop 13, Peabody Blue 8
Winthrop continued its winning ways in the District 16 All-Star tournament, defeating Peabody, 13-8, on Sunday.
David DiCiccio got the victory on the mound, striking out six and walking none.
In the third inning, Winthrop first baseman Augie Cherico gave DiCiccio all the run support he would need when he hit a pinch-hit grand slam to center field. Jasper Ezekiel also added a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
Jack Sicurella came on in relief and finished the game for Winthrop.
