SAUGUS – The state fire marshal’s office on Thursday announced State Police filed a criminal complaint against a Saugus resident who sustained burns and hand injuries on July 4 when a firework exploded in his left hand.Joseph Carozza, 23, of 7 Oak Point Road, will be summonsed to Lynn District Court on Aug. 24 to face one count of fireworks possession, state Department of Fire Services spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth said.Carozza was injured in the backyard of his parents’ home. He remains hospitalized. Fireworks found in Carozza’s bedroom were taken by the State Police Bomb Squad for disposal.”Every year the Massachusetts fire service warns the public about the dangers of fireworks, and this incident clearly demonstrates the need for such warnings,” said Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, adding, “In this incident and other tragedies around the country, there was evidence of alcohol as a factor that impaired judgment.”Fireworks stored in homes can be exposed to heat, shock, friction and moisture, warned Saugus Fire Chief Donald McQuaid.
