Summer paves the way for road repairs

Thor Jourgensen

July 17, 2015 by Thor Jourgensen

LYNN – Looking like a dinosaur bearing down on its prey, a Wirtgen surface miner machine lumbered onto Towns Court Thursday, preparing to make a meal of the side street?s cracked and bumpy asphalt. With work on Towns Court, located by Flax Pond, scheduled for Thursday and today, the prospect of driving on a new street pleased Nancy Cook.?It?s good they are doing it – there?s a lot of wear and tear,” the eight-year Towns Court resident said.Towns Court is one of 25 local streets on a city resurfacing list. The street work is scheduled for this month, but city Public Works Commissioner Andrew Hall said weather and schedule delays mean start and finish dates for individual street projects can change. The city received $1.5 million in state tax dollars last year to pay for street repairs across Lynn. City consultant Beta Group scours the city?s 153 miles of road and compiles lists of streets in need of repairs. Road wear and tear and traffic volume are factors, Hall said, in how Beta ranks streets for repair priority.Tentatively scheduled street work include Baldwin Street between Union Street and Essex Street; Barrett Court from Boston Street; Bradford Terrace from Linwood Street; Casco Road from Lynnfield Street to Salem Street; Clovelly Street from Goodridge Street to Western Avenue; Curtis Street from Greenwood Avenue; Frederick Circle; Graves Avenue from Western Avenue to Goodridge Street; Greenwood Avenue from Preston Street to Cliff Street; Houston Place from Geneva Avenue and Houston Street from Houston Place to Boston Street.Other streets include Laighton Street from Franklin Street to Lawton Avenue; Appleton Street from Arbor Court; Arbor Court from Arbor Street to Appleton Street; Aubrey Terrace from Lewis Street; Neptune Street Court from South Street; Norcross Terrace from Lewis Street; Revere Avenue from Walnut Street to Belmont Avenue and River Street from Summer Street.Additional streets include River Street Court from River Street to Canal Street; South Street Place from South Street; Sunnyside Road from Linwood Street; Towns Court; West Colony Road from Western Avenue to Rowell Avenue; and Whittier Street from Hanover Street to Lloyd Street.
