The North Shore Generals got their New England Football League season off to a great start Saturday night at Manning Field in Lynn with a 32-27 victory over the Southern Maine Raging Bulls.
In the fourth quarter, Southern Maine scored with five minutes left to take a 27-26 lead, but the Generals didn’t quit. They drove the length of the field and scored the go-ahead TD on a dazzling 25-yard run from Kelvin Amparo with under two minutes left.
The Bulls showed why they were the consensus preseason favorite to win the league by driving to the Generals’ 25 yard line. With under a minute to go, Jesse Fowler made an acrobatic interception in the end zone to seal the Generals’ first win of the season.
The Generals jumped out to a fast start as Amparo hit Fowler on a 56-yard scoring strike on the first play from scrimmage of the 2015 season.
Amparo, who had TD passes of 56 and 30 yards, also rushed for three touchdowns. He got great blocking up front from the Generals’ strong offensive line. Chris Lane pitched in with a 30-yard pass reception, while Jesse Pearce and Limbert Thomas added several clutch receptions.
The Generals defense played tough all night against one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Twice in the first half, the defense stopped Southern Maine on fourth down to hold the Bulls to only 7 first-half points.
The defense was led by the Lynn trio of Edward Owens-Finch, Andre Langley, and Tony Johnson up front. The G-Men also got solid play from linebackers Therich Roc and Steven Simpson, as well as defensive back DaVaughn Goss. The Generals travel to Boston on Saturday to take on the Boston Bandits.
