It is a rite of summer off the coast of Marblehead as 313 sailors ages 8-18 manning 230 boats kicked off the Pleon Yacht Club?s Junior Race Week on Monday.
Eight different classes of boats were in action in the first set of 18 total races that culminates on Wednesday.
In the 420 champ class, the boat of Parker Swanson and Joseph Chomyn from the Harraseeket Yacht Club won the first two races and placed 12thin the final race to take the lead with 14 total points. Carly Siemen and Griffin Primeau, also from Harraseeket, won the last race of the day and is second overall with 19 points.
Grant Adam and Gavin Dowlen, of the host Pleon Yacht Club, had fourth-, seventh- and 14th-place finishes to finish the day in third position, ahead of Rowan Byrne and Gillian Winn from the Manchester Sailing Academy. Jeremy McCauley and Micaela Coonley of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club are in fifth place.
In the 420 green class, the Hingham Yacht Club has taken control early, placing boats in the first five positions and seven of the first eight. Leading the pack is the boat of Tyler Buckeridge and Francis Cundari, who had two fourths and a second on Monday. Second is Ben Monnich and Taylor Grace (13 points) followed by Michael Hill and Morgan Langenhagen (16), Kaylee Hill and Sydney Langenhagen (16) and Peyton Belsher and Leah Cohen (18). Timothy Nerich and Collin Murphy of the Nahant Sailing Program are in sixth place with 25 points.
The Pleon Yacht Club had all five entries in the Laser 4.7 class, led Mason Cheney, who had three first-place finishes and a second-place for five points. Second is Nils Skaane (12), followed by Morgan Cheney (13), Hadley Kaeyer (15) and Edward Backman (15).
In the Laser Radial class Caleb Robinson from Sail Maine is in first place after winning three of four races for eight points. Pleon?s William Bedford, with three second-place and one fifth-place finishes, is second with 11 points. Cooper Siepert (15) of Regattaman is third, followed by Reid Shanabrook (16) of Pleon and Gregory Corsello (24) of Sail Maine.
The biggest group of the day was the Opti Champ fleet, which featured 70 boats. Leading the way is Hayden Van Alstyne of the Portland Yacht Club with 18 points. Grace Gear ofAgamenticus Yacht Club is secondwith 31 points, followed by Magdelaina Putnam (38) of Pleon, Kate Rogers (40) and Eliza Dunn (40), both of Hingham Yacht Club.
In the Opti Green class, boats were divided by even or odd numbers on their sails. In the even group, Pleon?s Charlie Pingree is first with seven points, followed by Theo Burtis (10) of Annisquam Yacht Club and Ashley Hoguet (11) of Pleon.In the odd division, Jamie Gabbay of Annisquam leads with five points, followed by Jack Wieman (5) of Manchester Sailing Association, followed by Jack Homa, who is unaffiliated, with eight points.
