Marblehead Regatta is off to the races

It was beautiful, sunny weather for the first day of the Helly Hansen Marblehead NOOD Regatta, which set sail Thursday with the preliminary races for all divisions.
About 1,000 sailors are expected to race over four days during the 126th annual Marblehead Race Week, which runs through Sunday.
In the Laser Full Rig division, Chris Hufstader of Warren, R.I. (Sail Newport) took first place. Lynnfield’s Bill Rothwell (Winthrop Frostbite) finished in second place. Wayne Colahan of Marblehead (Eastern YC) finished in third, while Michael Kearney of Swampscott (Eastern YC) finished fourth and Andrew Burton of Marblehead (Eastern YC) finished fifth.
In the Rhodes 19 division, Marblehead’s Dru Slattery (Eastern YC) took first place. David Nelson of Stoughton (Hingham YC) finished in second, while Chris Adam of Marblehead (Corinthian YC) finished third. The team of Jim Raisides and Charles Pendleton, both of Marblehead, finished in fifth place.
In the Town Class division, David Cooke of Harvard (Corinthian YC) finished first. Jennie Aspinall placed second and William Larkin was third; both are from Marblehead and Boston YC. Arthur “Tip” O’Neill of Swampscott (Marblehead YC) finished fourth, and Peter Maitland of Salem (Marblehead YC) finished fifth.
Greg Mancusi-Ungaro of Marblehead (Eastern YC) won the IOD division race, with Charlie Richter of Lexington, another Eastern YC member, finishing in second. Nahant’s Herb Motley (Dolphin YC) finished in third place, and Stephen D. Barrett of Salem (Dolphin YC) was fourth. Timothy J. Dittrich of Swampscott (Corinthian YC) finished in fifth place.
In the International Etchells, Marblehead’s Karen Sheard (Boston YC) finished first. Thomas Hornos, also a Marblehead resident and a member of Boston YC, placed second. Mark Toso of Wenham placed third and Stephen Gaynor of Marblehead was fourth; both are members of Corinthian YC. Don Brush, an independent boater from Geicester, Vt., finished in fifth place.
In the J-105 division, Beverly’s Steven J. Goldberg (Jubilee YC) took first place, while Fred de Napoli of Danvers (Corinthian YC) took second. Brian Yanofsky of Beverly (Boston YC) finished third and Marty Galligan of Carlisle (Jubilee YC) was fourth. The team of Jon and Stewart Wales from Marblehead (Eastern YC) finished fifth.
It was a trio of Jubilee YC members atop the podium in the J-24 division race. Beverly’s John Denman took first place, Michael Lachmayr of Boxford took second, and Phil Corderio of Winchester took third. Marblehead’s Greg Williams (Monmouth Boat Club) finished in fourth place, while Fred Doem of Laval, Quebec finished fifth.
Marblehead’s Tyler Doyle (Boston YC) took first place in the J-70 race. Eastern YC’s Jud Smith, also of Marblehead, finished second and Holly Fabyan of Manchester-by-the-Sea (Manchester YC) finished third. Jeffery Bistrong, also of Manchester and Manchester YC, finished fourth. Frank McNamara of Wenham (Eastern YC) finished fifth.
In the Viper-640 race, Charleston, S.C.’s Thomas Loutrel (Corinthian YC) took first place. Bob Bowditch of West Boothbay Harbor, Maine finished second and Kay VanValkenburgh of Boston finished third. Mark Engelhardt of Montpelier, Vt. (Lake Champlain YC) finished in fourth place, while Jean-Francois Guillou finished in fifth.
