A grande mess on Route 1 in Saugus

July 25, 2015 by Bridget Turcotte

SAUGUS – An elderly woman was parking her car at the Starbucks on Route 1 South around noon on Friday when her foot slipped off the brake and sent the car crashing into the store windows.”Thank God I had enough sense to put the car in reverse,” said the driver, a woman from Chelsea who declined to give her name. While she was able to stop the car from going into the store, two floor to ceiling window panes shattered and there was damage to the window frame. The woman and her friend were both in the car at the time of the incident but no injuries were reported and emergency medical services were declined, according to Lt. Stephen MacDonald of Saugus Police. The car jumped the curb and went over the sidewalk before striking the windows. Shattered glass from the store window rained down onto the windshield.”Luckily, nobody was hurt,” the woman said.”Everyone has been very nice about it. Even the poor manager came out with ice water for us.”Her gray 2006 Ford Focus sustained minimal damage considering the upheaval of the scene, but it was still towed out of the parking lot. Damage was mainly to the driver’s side bumper, headlight and hood.”The airbags didn’t even go off,” she said, a bit perplexed.”Thank God they didn’t,” commented her friend. The coffee shop at 723 Broadway was out of commission for a few hours, but store manager Spencer McGinniss was hopeful that it would soon reopen.”We kindly asked people to leave,” McGinniss said.”We probably won’t be able to get the windows fixed until Monday,” he said. “We’ll board up the windows and reopen later today.””We are thankful that no injuries were sustained. The store was briefly closed and has since reopened after inspection by local authorities,” said a spokesperson for Starbucks.
