Kym Pappathanasi successfully defended her title at Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead on Friday, winning her sixth Women’s Club Championship.
She won her final match, 2 and 1, over five-time champion Joanne Steadman (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013).
The final match was close for the entire round and featured good shot-making and clutch putts by both players.
Pappathanasi, of Beverly, jumped out to a two-up lead with wins on the third and fourth holes, but Steadman, of Marblehead, answered right back, making a birdie on the fifth green.
It looked like Steadman would even the match on the sixth hole, but a combination of her three-putt and Pappathanasi dropping an 18-foot putt for par gave Pappathanasi her two-hole lead back.
The seventh was halved with pars. Then Steadman won the eighth with a par and the ninth with a conceded birdie, knocking her third shot to within 2 feet of the hole.
That evened the match after nine holes.
Pappathanasi got her lead back on 10 by sinking a 10-foot par putt, but Steadman came right back with a win on 11 to square the match again.
After Steadman knocked her second shot on the 12th green and Pappathanasi was in the rough short of the green, it looked like Steadman was going to take her first lead of the match.
Steadman two-putted for par before Pappathanasi calmly knocked in her 7-footer for par and a halved hole.
The 13th was halved before Pappathanasi went into the lead again, winning the 14th and 15th holes to go two-up.
Pappathanasi lost the 16th hole to drop to only one-up going to 17.
However, she won the 17th with a five to capture her sixth championship. Pappathanasi’s other wins came in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2014.
On their way to the finals, Pappathanasi won matches against Pam Scangas and Diana Breed.Steadman prevailed against Karen Harvey and Barbara Bane.
