Shooting in Lynn shakes neighbors

Thor Jourgensen

August 7, 2015 by Thor Jourgensen

LYNN – Washington Street and Hamilton Avenue residents said the neighborhood where two people sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds Wednesday night has been quiet and relatively safe.Police responding to a report of shots fired arrived at 162 Washington St. at 9:30 p.m. to find gunshot victims in the driveway at that address. Emergency medical personnel transported a 23-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds to Massachusetts General Hospital and transported a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to Salem Hospital.Police Lt. Richard Donnelly said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, He said police officers “encountered a large group of people in the driveway who were reluctant to provide the police with any information pertaining to the shooting.”Washington Street resident Shawn Duong heard what he described as six gunshots that sounded like firecrackers Wednesday night. With the police station located at 300 Washington St., just blocks away from the shooting scene, the lifelong Lynn resident said there is relatively little the police can do to improve neighborhood security. His family is among the neighborhood?s well-established residents, and his parents, Soc and Srykimahay Duong, plant an extensive garden in plots and growing racks in their front yard.Paige Haskell moved to Hamilton Street around the corner from the shooting scene a week ago and, like Duong, thought she heard firecrackers outside her home Wednesday night.?No one thought it was anything until the police showed up,” she said. She said her new neighborhood has been relatively quiet, adding: “If worse comes to worse, I can go up the street to my grandmother?s.”Police urged anyone with information on the shooting to call the department, 781-595-2000. Anonymous tips may be texted by typing the word tiplynn and the information to tip411 or 847411. Anonymous phone call tips may be made to 781-477-4444.
