The North Shore Navigators ran out of gas by the end of a weekend home and home series with the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks. After a thrilling win in extra innings on Saturday, the Navs lost, 13-1, to the first-place Sharks Sunday night on the island.
With the loss, the Navs finished the regular season 33-22 and in second place in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League Eastern Division. The Navs will be the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, and their first-round matchup will be against the No. 5 Nashua Silver Knights (28-28) Tuesday at Fraser Field.
The Navs were undone by a six-run Sharks’ second inning. After three straight RBI singles from Donovan Casey, Jack Roberts, and Brian Campbell, the Sharks grabbed three extra runs on poor fielding and throwing errors by the Navs.
North Shore got one back in the top of the sixth when Mike Rizzitello walked with the bases loaded.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the Sharks started scoring again. Casey knocked another RBI single, then Brian Campbell hit a two-run single. After Jon Mayer recorded an RBI groundout, the Navs made another throwing error to bring Campbell home. When the dust settled, the Sharks led, 11-1.
The Sharks added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Adam Dulsky knocked an RBI double, then scored on a groundout to make it 13-1.
Dylan Dennis got the win on the mound for the Sharks, while Pete Gonski took the loss for North Shore.
The Navs set a franchise record with their 33rd win of the season on Saturday, coming back for a 4-3 victory in the 11th inning against the Sharks.
Brandon Fischer (St. Thomas Aquinas) led off the final frame with a double but was thrown out at home trying to score on a failed pickoff throw at second base.
The Navs rallied from there as Richie Fecteau (Salem State) walked and advanced when Chad Martin (Bowdoin) singled. Sharks reliever Donovan Casey (Boston College) uncorked three wild pitches, allowing the baserunners to advance.
Martin scored when a pitch brushed catcher Michael Rizzitello (Dowling) back in the right-handed batter’s box, pushing the Navs to their second extra-inning win of the season.
Two Navs errors in the fifth inning allowed the visitors to take a 2-1 lead against incoming Boston College freshman Daniel Metzdorf. Despite five innings over which he allowed just one earned run and struck out three, the BB&N graduate left with the Navs trailing by a run. After earning a victory with five innings of two-hit ball at Fraser last Sunday,ChristianBahlinger allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.
