Plenty for Y kids to see on land and seaThey spent July swimming, playing sports and meeting new friends on Neptune Boulevard, but 200 children who signed up to spend the summer at the Lynn YMCA also sailed out to the Boston Harbor Islands for days filled with fishing, art on the shore and environmental exploration. The local students were among 5,000 Boston-area kids to explore Boston Harbor this summer thanks to environmental advocacy organization Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. Beginning with a brief history lesson and harbor cleanup explanation from maritime historian David Coffin, the students took boat trips courtesy of Bay State Cruise Company to Georges, Peddocks and Spectacle islands.Students learned about Georges Island’s Civil War history, fished for flounder and skates, and swam off Peddocks’ sandy beach.”At Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, we are particularly proud to serve as the Boston Harbor connection for a generation of young people,” said Save the Harbor President Patricia Foley.
