August 24, 2015 by Bridget Turcotte

SAUGUS – Banana Splitz on Lincoln Avenue is showing support for the town in a sweet way.The shop announced Friday that it is revealing a new, limited-edition ice cream sundae flavor in honor of the town’s upcoming 200th anniversary celebration. The sundae, which will be called “Saugus 200” will consist of vanilla soft-serve ice cream, strawberries, marshmallow sauce, whipped cream, red and blue jimmies, and have a cherry on top. It’s a good representation of the town because “Saugus’ colors are red and white,” said Vicky Del Toro Wiegman, who owns the ice cream shop with her husband, Rob Wiegman. The red and blue jimmies represent the bicentennial, she said.”At certain times we do limited-time sundaes,” she said. “We will do Bruins limited-edition sundaes or when the Red Sox are doing good, we do limited-edition Red Sox sundaes.”We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to represent Saugus,” Wiegman said.Banana Splitz has been family-owned and operated since it first opened in 2007, she said.”It’s run by me, my husband, and my children,” she said. “At one point, four of my five children have each worked here. The little one is only 10, but she is looking forward to it.”Limited-edition sundaes at Banana Splitz are a size bigger than its large size, Wiegman said. “They are three scoops of ice-cream and have three toppings each.”They typically cost $7.15, while a large size costs $6.50.”For these, we will have a price break in honor of the 200th celebration,” Wiegman said. “We will sell these at our large sundae price.”In addition to creating a special sundae flavor to honor the town, Banana Splitz made a $200 donation to the Saugus 200 Bicentennial Committee. It also donated two $25 gift certificates. The $200 donation will go towards the time-capsule contest, said Selectman Jennifer D’Eon. The two $25 gift certificates will be used as door prizes at the town’s Spirit of Saugus Play in September. The “Saugus 200” sundae will be offered throughout September.
