Former English coach Hogan returns to basketball at Fisher College

September 1, 2015 by Tyler Alicudo

LYNN – The gym at the old Lynn Classical High School, named for famed basketball coach Herb Brenner, was always home to Lynn’s Fred Hogan.
And now Hogan, who, as girls’ basketball coach led the Lynn English Bulldogs to their lone appearance at the TD Garden in 2014, will be returning to the Brenner gym.
Hogan, who has decades of coaching experience under his belt, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Fisher College women’s basketball team, which plays its home games at the Brenner Gym. The gym has been refurbished with a new hardwood floor and a scoreboard.
Hogan will join second-year head coach Maureen Laroche in the next chapter of his tenure as coach.
“Coach Laroche made it easy for me to say ?yes,'” Hogan said. “It almost reminds me of my time at Lynn English.”
While leading the Bulldogs, Hogan recorded more than 140 wins, five Northeastern Conference North titles, and one Division 1 North title before stepping down.
In his last game coaching English, the Bulldogs lost to Braintree, 59-41, in the Division 1 state semifinals in March 2014, ending their storybook 25-0 run.
“I just wanted to relax and step back from everything,” he said. “I started coaching Pop Warner in West Lynn this year and that helped, but I’ve realized that coaching is my passion.”
Hogan is optimistic for the opportunity to help Fisher rebound from a three-win season last year.
“A lot of people don’t motivate me too well, but she (Laroche) does,” Hogan said. “And Fisher is a beautiful campus (in Boston).
“Our goal is to build a family atmosphere and get better and better,” he said. “These kids are going to understand that they are a part of something and that’s special.”
The Fisher College women’s basketball home opener is Nov. 17 against Lynden State at 7 p.m.Tyler Alicudo can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter @Alicudo_Live.
