Classical golf looking to improve with an athletic roster

Mike Alongi

September 3, 2015 by Mike Alongi

After a tough season in 2014, the Lynn Classical Rams golf team is loaded with depth, experience and athleticism for the 2015 season.
Last season:The Rams finished 6-12.Coach:Jack Morrison is entering his eighth season with the Rams.
Key players lost:The Rams lost two key contributors from last year?s team. Mark Brazell and Kyle Morrill were both Item All-Stars last season and helped lead the way in scoring for Classical.
Key players this year:Morrison will be looking to his senior group to provide leadership, especially from senior captain Andre Gaudet. Senior Sean Dean and junior Steve Patrie will also be looked at to be the high scorers for the Rams. Morrison also expects junior Herbie Newton and sophomore Sean Devin to make big leaps forward this season.
Strengths:They say there is strength in numbers and Morrison is feeling that way this year. The Rams have 23 players who came out for the team, which is far more than in many other years. But it?s not just the numbers.
?We have some real athletes on this team,” he said. “If I had to guess, I?d say about 90 percent of the guys play at least two varsity or junior varsity sports.”
And he?s hoping that all that athleticism will translate to the golf course.
Weaknesses:Despite an abundance of athleticism, Morrison knows there?s still plenty to work on.
?We?ve got a lot of work to do as far as our golf skills are concerned,” he said. “But I?m hoping that the guys? athleticism will help us get by for the time being while we work on things.”
Opening match:The Rams open Thursday when they face off against Swampscott at Kernwood Country Club in Salem at 3:30 p.m.
Big matches on the schedule:Classical will play some great courses this season, including a matchup with a solid Hamilton-Wenham team at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton. The Rams will also face off with Danvers at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton. And of course, there?s the annual matchup against Lynn English at Gannon Golf Course.
?We always get excited to go out and play the Bulldogs,” Morrison said.”Mike Alongi can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @m_alongi.
