LYNN – A 3-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition Wednesday night at Mass. General Hospital after being struck by a car driven by an elderly woman on Franklin Street earlier in the day, police said. The boy, who was with his 14-year-old brother, ran into the street just as the woman was turning onto Franklin Street from Western Avenue, according to Lt. Glenn Dunnigan. The child and woman, neither of whom police would identify, are both Lynn residents.Officer Ron Brown was working on detail nearby and was waved down to administer first aid after the accident, Dunnigan said. According to Lt. Dave Brown, the woman was taking a left turn from Western Avenue onto Franklin Street when the accident occurred. The child was rushed to the Massachusetts General Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit, where he underwent surgery Wednesday night to set a broken leg.”The boy went under the car,” said Lt. Brown, “but was not pinned.”Lt. Brown said a passer-by scooped up the child, but that Brown feared he might have internal injuries and worked to stabilize him.”(Officer Brown) called in and gave updates as they responded to the scene,” Dunnigan said. “The child was conscious, alert and crying.”Beyond the broken femur, it is not known whether the boy has any other injuries, or to what extent, Lt. Brown said.Officer Joshua Seaman followed the ambulance to the hospital where the child’s mother arrived to be with her son.Police on the scene said the woman was very shaken up over the accident. The scene was secured by police for a few hours after the incident but was released after they learned that the child was in stable condition. A section of Franklin Street was closed off and detoured.”(The child) is doing much better since being admitted,” Dunnigan said.
