SAUGUS — As part of their Wolf Badge requirements, Cub Scouts in Pack 62 collected and donated three trash bags filled with blankets and socks to those who need them at Boston’s Pine Street Inn.
Collecting the items for the Boston shelter helped the scouts fulfill one of the many requirements the Wolves must achieve to earn their Wolf Badge, said den leader Julie Martin.
“One of the adventures is called Council of Fire,” she said. “Part of this is for the den to work together on a community-service project.
“We wanted to do something that was a way of giving back, especially during the holidays,” she said.
Within the pack, which consists of nine boys, the Wolf Badge candidates collected items throughout November and until the beginning of December, concluding the drive on Dec. 7, said Martin.
“We asked families to bring a donation to meetings including our award ceremony,” said Martin.
Over the course of a little over a month, the children filled three bags with donations. A few of the children went along with den leaders to deliver the items and were given a tour of the facility.
“It was a fabulous tour and really mind-opening for the kids,” Martin said.
Because only a few of the scouts were able to make it on the tour, Martin said she hopes to arrange a trip back to the Boston shelter to give more of the children the opportunity to see the cause they were helping.
“It is a great group of boys who are working hard to achieve their accomplishments,” Martin said.
Also part of the pack’s Council Fire adventure will be a Flag Retirement Ceremony scheduled for Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. at Breakheart Reservation.
“It’s also great because I don’t think many people are aware of how to properly dispose of tattered or damaged flags,” Martin said.
“This project was a great way for the Wolves to learn about giving back and encouraging other members in the pack to do so too,” she said.
