Sophomores Olivia Nazaire and Marnelle Garraud led the way for the St. Mary’s girls’ basketball team as the Spartans beat Austin Prep, 56-37, on the road in Reading.
Nazaire, a forward, finished with a double-double, recording 20 points and 12 rebounds. Garraud had 17 points and six assists from the point guard spot.
The Spartans (7-0) jumped out to an early lead, going on a 23-4 run to start the game. Nazaire and Garraud were mainly responsible for the surge, contributing 19 of those first 23 points.
“Anytime you can go on the road and get a win in our league, it’s a good win,” said St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall. “We came out strong tonight, then fell asleep for a bit. But we were able to recover and finish strong.”

Girls’ Hockey
Lynn/Saugus/Winthrop 1, Belmont 0
It wasn’t the prettiest of wins for the Bulldogs, but they managed to fend off Belmont and hang on for the shutout victory.
Kelsey Griffiths scored in the first period with assists from Mia Price and Nicole Pucillo. After that, the Bulldogs struggled to find the back of the net.
“We had some shots, we had some chances,” said Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci. “I thought we played well in the first period, but (Belmont) played better in the second. In the third, we kind of had them on the ropes.”
Gretchen Howe earned her second shutout of the season, and, at this pace, might have a chance to tie Katie Burt’s Bulldogs record of five shutouts in a season.
In other action, Stoneham defeated Bishop Fenwick, 2-1.
