School Roundup: English swim sails past Swampscott

The Lynn English swim and dive team defeated Swampscott, 109-68, on Tuesday night at the Peter A. Sawim Natatorium at Lynn Tech.

Brandon Musaku, Matt Bruno, Shanel Turransky, Peter Phelan and Devin Curley each won multiple events for the Bulldogs (2-1). Musaku won both the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 1.6 seconds) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.19). Bruno won the 50 freestyle (25.75) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.89), and Peter Phelan won both the 100 freestyle (58.94) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.46).

Turransky took first place in diving and was also a member of two winning relay teams. Curley was a member of two winning relay teams as well.

The team of Turransky, Phelan, Bruno and Musaku won the 200 medley relay (2:01.21). The team of Turransky, Curley, Kylie Moorehouse and Emma Trahant won the 200 freestyle relay (2:01.84), and the team of Phelan, Bruno, Curley and Musaku won the 400 freestyle (4:15.88).

Uajda Musaku won the 100 backstroke (1:07.83).

“Tonight was a great night for English swimming,” said English coach Lisa Trahant. “We had multiple personal best times, and the student-athletes showed a lot of team spirit and sportsmanship.”

For Swampscott, Kasey Kennedy came in first in the 200 individual medley (2:32:88). Rachel Rooklin also had a strong performance for the Big Blue, taking part in the 50 freestyle and coming in at 1:57:99.

Beverly 97, Classical 88

The Rams were unable to get the last few points they needed for the win in the final relay, but came away with tremendous successes for many of their swimmers. In diving, Classical’s Sarah Sirois and Alex Pedro took first and second place, respectively. The 200 freestyle relay team of Carly Mendonca, Eric Macorri, Craig Mordaunt and Kevin Chasse took first place. Macorri also came in first in the 100 breaststroke. Mendonca qualified for states in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Marblehead 85, Revere 79

Winners for the Magicians included Zach Michaels (200 freestyle), Grace Maguire (200 individual medley), Tom Rockett (50 freestyle), Kylie Cronin (500 freestyle), and Meagan Hathaway (500 freestyle). In diving, Katie Walker scored 254.45.

Gloucester/Rockport 99, Peabody 66

Despite the loss, it was a day of personal bests for the Tanners. Captain Paige Hayward won the diving portion of the meet and also achieved a new personal-best time in the 100 breaststroke. Fellow captain Conor McCarthy hit a new personal best in the 200 individual medley, and also won the 500 freestyle. Other winners for Peabody included Nicole O’Neill (50 freestyle) and Tom Zalewski (100 breaststroke). Shaelyn Kelley (100 freestyle), Nicole Lavoie (100 freestyle) and Zalewski (50 freestyle) also recorded new personal bests.

Danvers 98, Salem 67

Sarah Roach, Roie Shemesh and Ally Nalven swept the 200 freestyle, while Cambria Cloutier and Tyler Keyes took first and second in the 200 individual medley for the Falcons. Other wins for Danvers included Tim Unczur in the 50 freestyle and Jared Casey in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke, as well as wins in all three relays. The Falcons also swept the diving portion of the meet with Jackson McPherson taking first, and Cam Bornstein and Brandon Farrar taking second and third, respectively.

Salem’s Amy Nguyen qualified for states in the 100 freestyle (57.25). Salem also saw first-place finishes from Aidan Keenan in the 500 free (6:27.65) and Renne Venico in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.93). The 400 free relay team of Lily Jerzylo, Grace Theriault, Reshelle Venico and Ngyuen qualified for sectionals (4:21.22).

GYMNASTICS

Beverly 133.7, Gloucester 121.3

The Panthers gymnastics team notched a win at home to open up the season. The win was the first for new Beverly coach Julie Sciamanna.
