The Lynn Tech boys’ basketball team spotted Mystic Valley nine straight points out of the gate on Tuesday night and never recovered, falling, 62-51, to their Commonwealth Athletic Conference foe.
Senior guard Michael Anaya led the Tigers with 11 points. Senior Andison Perez and junior Jamar Johnson, both forwards, each added ten points.
Mystic Valley junior Michael Carlino drained a corner three-pointer to open the Eagles’ scoring, before adding two layups to conclude the 9-0 run.
“I thought the kids really played hard,” Lynn Tech head coach Dave Leary said. “(Mystic Valley) was ready for our pressure, passed through it and got an early lead, so we were fighting from behind the whole game.”
Senior Justin Lewis broke Tech’s near-five-minute scoring drought by finishing an offensive rebound for two points. The Tigers scored eight of the final 15 points in the first quarter, six of which came from Perez.
Tech held a 14-12 scoring advantage in the second as Johnson chipped in with six points.
The Tigers came within four points with just over five minutes to play as Perez put back an offensive rebound after taking a charge on Carlino’s drive to the basket.
Anaya and senior Michael Tate hit threes in the final quarter, but the Eagles hit seven free throws to put the game out of reach.
Tech had trouble contesting 6-foot-6 center Matt O’Connor, whose 21 points led the Eagles.
“He’s definitely one of the biggest guys we have in our league. We battled as best we could,” Leary said of O’Connor. “We hope to get better and be able to play with teams like this in the future.”
Marblehead 63, Swampscott 42
Two Marblehead players recorded double-doubles as the Magicians defeated Swampscott on the road. Sophomore forward Derek Marino led the way for Marblehead (3-4) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Bo Millett was right behind with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
“We played great defensively to start the game, then we let (Swampscott) crawl all the way back in it by the start of the fourth,” said Marblehead coach Mike Giardi. “But the guys did a good job of staying with it and holding on for the win. The defense really picked up in that final quarter.”
For Swampscott (1-6), senior captain Venantius Phillip led the way with 13 points. Senior captain Jack Porter had 11 points.
KIPP 68, Pioneer Everett 47
Senior Dave Metelus led the Panthers in scoring with 26 points and added 14 rebounds as KIPP powered past Pioneer on the road in Everett. Freshman Nate Mehu also had a big game for the Panthers (4-2), recording a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds.
“Overall, it was a really strong performance by us,” said KIPP coach Chris Norkun. “We got really good bench performances and we were able to play 12 guys tonight, so I’m really happy with our effort.”
Peabody 61, Revere 36
Matt D’Amato was the high scorer for the Tanners (2-3) with 13 points, followed closely by John Lawrence with 12 points. Moisse Irizarry just missed a double-double for Peabody with 10 points and nine rebounds.
“I think we really played well both offensively and defensively tonight,” said Peabody coach Thad Broughton. “We did a nice job moving the ball around on offense and we really pressured their shooters on defense. It was a very good win for us.”
Danvers 51, Beverly 47
Devonn Allen was the leading scorer for the Falcons (5-2) with 17 points. Rashad Francois and Mike Nestor each scored 10 points.
“Beverly played us tough all night,” said Danvers coach John Walsh. “We just couldn’t put them away for the longest time. It was a tough win for sure.”
Sam Traicoff led the way for Beverly with 22 points. Ryan Anderson had 10 points, and Pat Gavin contributed six points and 10 rebounds.
Saugus 71, Winthrop 53
Kyle Autilio and David Rowinsky were the top scorers for Saugus as the Sachems improved to 5-2. Autilio put up 19 points, while Rowinsky contributed 17. Evan DeCristoforo had a double-double for the Sachems with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Dan Bertrand went 4-for-5 from three-point range for 12 points.
Salem 70, Gloucester 30
The Witches’ (7-0) defense came up big, holding Gloucester’s top scorers to just a few points and collecting turnovers that they were able to turn into scoring opportunities. Alex Sanchez had 19 points and five assists on the night. Jhonel Roberts recorded 13 points and eight steals, while Ricky Arias scored 10 points for Salem.
“The defense really set the tone for us,” said Salem coach Tom Doyle.
