A one-goal game late in the third got away from the Spartans and became a 5-1 win for Arlington Catholic on Saturday night at Connery Rink.
Aylah Cioffi scored for St. Mary’s (3-6-1) with assists from Ashley Wojewodzic and Sarah Ryan. Coach Frank Pagliuca said the final score was not indicative of how close the game was.
“This was a 2-1 game with 5 1/2 minutes left, we were down 2-0,came back to make it 2-1,and they got three late ones, including and empty net goal,” Pagliuca said. “I thought on the whole we played well, now we’ll regroup, we have a week off until we play Austin Prep next Saturday.”
Beverly 1, Lynn/Winthrop/Saugus 0
The Bulldogs (4-3) lost a heartbreaker, going toe to toe with an excellent Beverly team, losing when the Panthers buried the winner with 45 seconds left in third period. Beverly’s McKinley Karpa scored with assists from Kristen McCarthy and Anna O’Neill.
“We played really hard, despite being outshot 38-11, we played them hard, it was scoreless, 0-0, very late in the game,” Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said.
Masconomet 4, Marblehead 1
In the first meeting between the teams since the Hamilton-Wenham skaters moved from Masconomet to Marblehead, the Chieftains prevailed, scoring late to make it 3-1, and then potting an empty net goal. Bella Peters set up Katelyn Clarke, who scored for Marblehead (2-5-2) in the second period.
“It was a very close game until late in the third period,” Marblehead coach Emily Hudak said. “I think we’re playing very well against some very good teams, we just have to start getting some goals.”
Quincy/North Quincy 3, Peabody/Lynnfield 2
The Tanners were up, 1-0, with 6:42 left in the third period. But things started to unravel for the Peabody/Lynnfield squad late.
A Tanners goal was called back and five penalties in the third period hurt Peabody/Lynnfield. Elise Murphy and Caroline Buckley each scored for the Tanners, and Cassie Mirasolo recorded an assist. Freshman Jessica Robert was strong and helped power the Tanners’ offense. Abby Buckley had 21 saves in the net.
“The team worked really hard and dominated the play for the first two periods,” said Peabody/Lynnfield coach Michelle Roach. “Each of our last three games, two of which were tough league games, have been decided by one goal. We’ve been playing well, we have to continue to work hard together and play three consistent periods of hockey. Each practice, each game, we’re improving and getting stronger. We’re looking forward to a few days off before facing off against Beverly on Saturday.
Matignon 1 Bishop Fenwick 0
After losing an earlier game to Matignon, 6-2, Crusaders coach Doug Anderson said the effort by his team in the rematch was outstanding.
“I am so proud of these girls, the effort was great, the girls worked hard, and really played great,” Anderson said. “We’ve lost three one-goal games in a row, but we’re competing as hard as we can.”
The Crusaders got off 21 shots against the tough Matignon squad. Megan Woodworth made 28 saves for Fenwick (3-5-1), Anderson said that his defense, led by Lauren Coccoluto, Meghan Carney and Gabby Dotolo, played very well in the loss.
