LYNN — YMCA of Metro North President Bruce Macdonald the organization is trying to solve a situation at the Lynn facility’s swimming pool where a set of submersible steps was removed in response to a city order.
Macdonald said the steps, removed after a recent city inspection, helped seniors and other swimmers get in and out of the pool safely.
“We are trying to find a solution,” Macdonald said.
City Deputy Building Commissioner Clint Muche said the pool’s annual inspection found the steps were not in compliance with a state sanitary code section prohibiting “anything that projects from the pool wall or ground that is not a ladder or handrail.”
Macdonald said YMCA employees complied with the city order to remove the steps but said he has received calls from swimmers angry they can no longer use steps to enter and exit the pool. He said the pool in the Neptune Boulevard YMCA building was built in 1973 with ladders that are difficult for some swimmers to use.
The YMCA can appeal the inspection order to the city Board of Health and state Department of Public Health. Macdonald said the YMCA will inquire if a lightweight version of the Fiberglas steps can be used in the pool and removed from the water after swimmers enter or exit the pool.
