Despite a great performance from junior guard Jamila Constantine, the Lynn Tech girls’ basketball team didn’t have enough firepower to get past Greater Lawrence on Monday night, falling, 43-37. Constantine finished with 18 points.
“She was an offensive threat the whole game,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler. “I would say this was probably a breakout game for her.”
Senior point guard Lila Nieves also had a solid game for Tech (1-7), running the offense all night and finishing with nine points.
“We knew (Greater Lawrence) was going to come out fighting tonight,” Wechsler said. “It was a close game and a tough loss, but I still think this may have been our best game of the season. The girls played great team basketball and worked together the whole night. It was a good team effort.”
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Cardinal Spellman 63, St. Mary’s 61
The Spartans played a solid game, but in the end, it was Cardinal Spellman which hit a shot at the buzzer to steal a win from St. Mary’s on the road.
“It was really a back and forth game,” said St. Mary’s coach Dave Brown. “That’s a tough place to play, and they’re a good team. We played well, but in the end we just didn’t have enough. Then we had a defensive breakdown at the end there which led to the shot, and they hit it at the buzzer.”
Junior guard Jonny Mercado was the leading scorer for the Spartans (4-4) with 21 points. Sophomore guard Calvin Johnson was right behind with 19 points, and junior forward Jonathan Mola had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Stephen Fama contributed solid minutes off the bench.
Saugus 63, Whittier Tech 44
The Sachems (6-3) had a very balanced score sheet as they grabbed a win over Whittier Tech on Monday. Dan Bertrand was Saugus’ leading scorer with 10 points, while Cam Williamson, Kyle Autilio and David Rowinsky scored eight points each.
“It was definitely a good win for us coming off of that loss to English the other day,” said Saugus coach Paul Moran. “Hopefully this will get us going in the right direction, because we have another tough game against Classical on Tuesday.”
St. John’s Prep 76, Central Catholic 51
Justin Connolly had a game-high 20 points for the Eagles as St. John’s improved to 6-2. Spencer Danforth had 13 points, Alec Buresh had 12 points and Harry O’Neil added 11 points. Tommy O’Neil just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.

This night belonged to St. Mary’s sophomore Anthony Bono, who scored his first career high school goal and finished with a hat trick as the Spartans improved to 9-1. Senior captain Conor Foley had two goals and three assists, while juniors Dante Maribito and Eric Pedro scored one goal each.
“This was a great team win for us tonight,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “We were a little sluggish getting off the bus after the long ride, but after the first period we were really able to lock in and pull away.”
