LYNN — A 31-year-old Medford resident apparently overdosed on heroin on Munroe Street Tuesday, police said.
Officers distributed Nasal Narcan to the woman, who was then transported to Union Hospital, according to police.
The Lynn Police Department received a report of an unresponsive female in a doorway at approximately 6:30 p.m.
“The officers assigned to this area of the city were quickly on scene,” said Lt. Dave Brown.
The Lynn Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance also responded.
“They observed the female lying on the ground and struggling to breathe,” Brown said. “The officers immediately recognized that she was suffering from an apparent opiate overdose, as she was sweating profusely, had pin point eyes, and shallow agonal breathing.”
Officer Andrew Beaver administered four millimeters of Nasal Narcan and Officer Mark Nerich provided rescue breathing with a bag valve mask. Nasal Narcan is assigned to uniformed officers out on patrol, Brown said.
The woman responded to the Narcan and began breathing on her own. She was transported to Union Hospital to receive additional treatment, he said.
“The officers recognized that the woman was overdosing and immediately responded to this medical emergency,” Brown said. “In this particular case, she will survive this. Unfortunately, opiate overdoses do not always have the same positive outcome.”
