The Lynn English girls tennis team (7-5) moved one step closer to clinching a tournament spot with a solid 5-0 win over Peabody at home on Monday. Lily Vu got the win in first singles, 6-3, 6-4. The next two singles matches were battles, with each going to a tiebreaker set. Regina Ngaleu got the win in second singles, 7-5, 2-6, 10-5, while Molly Nhiv emerged as the winner in an even tighter third singles match, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8.
In doubles play, the team of Jasmin Chhim and Victoria Say won the first match, 6-2, 6-3, and the team of Jennifer Benavides and Raymi Ramirez won the second match, 6-0, 6-2.
“Peabody is a much improved team and they gave us some great matches,” said English coach Lauren Mezzetti. “Everyone played really well for us, our doubles teams especially. They really helped lift us in this one.”
Classical 4, Beverly 1
The Rams continued their strong season with a win on the road in Beverly, improving to 12-1. Meredith MacDonald won the second singles match, 6-2, 6-4, and Lizzie Troisi won the third singles match, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, Shea Dunnigan and Briana Silva took the first match, 6-2, 6-1, and the team of Ashley Noel and Zoe Raymond fought to take the second match, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Lynnfield 4, Ipswich 1
Lynnfield coach Craig Stone switched up the lineups on Monday, but the results were the same as the Pioneers improved to 9-1.
Katie Nevils moved up and got the win in first singles, 6-0, 6-1, while doubles player Olivia Skelley moved up to second singles and grabbed a win, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, the team of Katie Nugent and Hayley Timmons won the first match, 6-1, 6-3, and the new team of Nicole Davie and Ally D’Amico got the win in the second match, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Swampscott 5, Winthrop 0
The Big Blue notched a clean sweep in Winthrop on Monday, led by Vivien Gere in first singles, 6-1, 6-0. Anna Cilley got the win in second singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Gina Hollenbach took the third singles match, 2-6, 6-3, 10-1.
The team of Sara Cunningham and Lily Sanphy took the first doubles match, 6-0, 6-0, while the team of Asja Zimmerman and Kate McDonough got the win in second doubles, 6-1, 6-7, 10-3.
“It was a great match today,” said Swampscott coach Nina Rogers. “It was definitely much closer than the final score showed.”
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0
At Gloucester, the Magicians won despite having three starters out with injuries.
“It’s demonstrates the depth of our team,” said coach Catherine Castoldi.
The Magicians’ winners (9-0 overall, 8-0 in the Northeastern Conference) got wins from Michellel Shub at first singles (6-0, 6-0), Meagan Hanratty at second (6-1, 6-0) and Simone Literov at third (6-1, 6-0).
Doubles winners were Sammi Gilberg-Lindsay Walker (6-0, 6-0) and Kaelyn Attridge-Ryan Driscoll (6-1, 6-0).
St. Mary’s 4, St. Joseph’s 1
At St. Joseph’s, the Spartans moved to 4-8. Wins came from Ana De Bernardo at second singles (8-2), Jen Watson, third singles (8-0); Taylor Hogan-Adelina Katzounos (8-3) at first doubles; Haleigh King-Caitlin Foley at second doubles (9-7).
BOYS
St. Mary’s 5, St. Joseph’s 0
The Spartans played eight-game pro sets against St. Joseph’s. At first singles, Brady Ryan won his match, 8-2, as did Matt McManus at second singles. Conor Foley, at third singles, won, 8-6.
The doubles teams of Jimoh George-Tyler Devine and Jonah Lezama-Jolssen Rodriguez won 8-3 and 8-5 respectively.
St. Mary’s improves its record to 12-1, and still has to settle a rain-shortened match with Austin Prep to determine the Catholic Central League title. The teams got to play three games last week before the rain postponed the rest of the match. It will be resumed May 23, with Ryan and McManus still on the court. If they both win, the Spartans and Cougars will tie for the title.
Beverly 4, Classical 1
The Panthers (9-0) continued their undefeated season with a win on the road at Classical. Peter Coletti led things off with a win in first singles, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Dylan LeBlanc in second singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Christian Goodwin in third singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Beverly also managed a win in doubles play, with the team of Colin Oliver and Frederico Poncini taking the first match, 6-1, 6-1.
Classical’s one win was at second doubles with the team of Alex Chea and Gerry Ennis, 7-6, 6-1. The Rams are 6-5.
English 4, Peabody 1
The Bulldogs (2-8) took both doubles matches en route to a win on the road in Peabody. The team of Adnan Haider and Andy Nguyen won the first doubles match, 6-0, 6-0, and the team of Matt Souvathong and Ble Ley took the second match, 6-1, 6-0.
English also managed a win in singles play, with Osaye Ayinla taking the second singles match, 6-2, 7-6. The Bulldogs won the third singles match by default.
Marblehead 4, Gloucester 1
The Magicians held on to remain undefeated (8-0) in the Northeastern Conference. Marblehead junior captain Justin Faia topped Gloucester’s Chris Noyes, 6-1, 6-3. Fellow junior captain Felix Litvak beat Reilly Zubricki 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), and Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal said she was proud of how Litvak was able to regroup and stay aggressive despite falling behind in the second set. At third singles, freshman Tony Gluskin lost his singles debut to Roger Tanaka in a close match, 6-4, 7-5.
At doubles, freshmen Dan Litvak and Jack Quigley beat Gloucester seniors Andrew Latassa and Jake Schrock, 6-3, 6-1. Finally, in second doubles, juniors Mike Conlin and Luke Fobert went three sets to beat Walker Holscher and Tyler Parisi, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
“Mike and Luke played better and better as the match progressed and really clinched their teamwork in the third set,” said Foukal.
Fenwick 5, Matignon 0
Alex Mizioch got the win in first singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, Greg Mattucci took the second singles match, 7-5, 6-3, and Pat McShea won the third singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play for the Crusaders (3-8), the team of co-captains Wil Bethune and Jack Palmachuk took the first match, 6-1, 6-2, and the team of Noah Anderson and Regan Zhu took the second match, 6-1, 6-4.
Swampscott 3, Winthrop 2
The Big Blue (7-3) swept the three singles matches to seal the win. Matt Jacobs took the first match, 6-0, 6-0, Sam Mayblyum won the second match, 6-4, 6-1, and Will Talebian took the third match, 6-1, 6-3.
