The Tanners set up an all-Peabody championship final in the James Geanoulis tournament with a mercy-rule, 17-2 win over the Everett Crimson Tide Sunday.
Peabody sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and jumped out to a 7-0 lead, then added a single run in the second on an RBI single by Jake Doherty that scored Ben Irvine, who had doubled. Four more runs in the third, and the Tanners held a commanding 12-1 lead.
The game ended in the sixth inning, as back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Irvine and Trevor Lodi, and a sacrifice fly by Alex D’Angelo ran the Tanners lead to 15 runs.
Irvine (2 doubles, 3 runs), Jon Lawrence (double, run) and Aaron Dollin (2 runs) had three hits each, while Jake Gustin (triple, double, 2 runs), Chris Gillen (2 runs) and Doherty (double, 3 runs) had two hits. Freshman Joe Gilmartin had his first varsity base hit.
Joe Maguire went six innings, allowing one earned run and only three hits, while Will Diezemann gave up one hit in one inning of relief.
Fenwick 2, Andover 1
In game one, starting pitcher J.P. Reiling picked up his fifth win of the season in a pitchers’ duel. He gave up a run on two hits in the first inning, then pitched his way out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the fourth. An RBI single by Robbie Murphy scored Simon Gonzalez (two doubles) and tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning.
Jimmy Moore scored the game-winner after he singled, went to third on a hit-and-run single by Cory Bright, then came home on a double play ball off the bat of R.J. Libby.
Andover had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but Reiling buckled down to get the final outs.
The Crusaders, the reigning Geanoulis champions, and Tanners will play for the championship this afternoon at Bezemes Diamond at 4.
Brendan Grant Tournament
Belmont 16, Lynnfield 2
The Cape Ann League’s longest winning streak came to an end Saturday at Brendan Grant Memorial Field as the host Marauders hammered the Pioneers, who had won 14 straight games dating back to April 23.
Freshman starter Fernando Gonzalez struggled with his control, giving up 11 runs (9 earned) on 10 hits and three walks with two hit batters in 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore Dan Jameson gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
The Pioneers’ only runs came on a two-run single by Mike Stellato in the third inning that scored center fielder Nick Colucci, who led off with a single, and shortstop Justin Juliano. Juniors Kyle Hawes (double) and Mike Federico also had hits for Lynnfield, which finished the regular season 16-4.
Salem 8, Gloucester 1
The Witches clinched both a tournament berth and a winning record for the first time since 2012 with a huge win Saturday.
Eddie Duran shut down the Fishermen, allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort.
On the offensive side, Jack McCarthy had the biggest hit of the game, a pinch-hit grand slam. Loany Rosario drove in a pair of runs as well.
St. John’s Prep 5, Marblehead 1
It took five pitchers for the Prep, but they combined to limit Marblehead to just four hits without a single walk. Eagles coach Dan Letarte highlighted pitchers Chris Murphy and Brendan Powlicki, who both pitched well.
Marblehead’s lone run came in impressive fashion. Sophomore Cole Garaventi crushed a home run to left field, not an easy feat at the pitcher-friendly Seaside Park.
SOFTBALL
Courtney Corning Tournament
Beverly 12, Peabody 5
In the championship game, the Tanners fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and never recovered. The Tanners’ first run came in the second when shortstop Alyssa Alperen led off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-1. Beverly scored two in the top of the third to lead 8-1. Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey led off the third with a walk and advanced to third on an Amanda Crawford double. Both runners scored on a big triple by Tianna Dawe (2-for-3, run scored). In the top of the fourth, Beverly had one run in already and the bases loaded, but Peabody center fielder Lexi Zammer made the defensive play of the game when she caught a fly ball and gunned down Corinne Coults at the plate to end the threat.
Beverly reliever Jackie Pia settled down and retired 10 of the next 12 batters to secure Beverly’s first tournament title since 2011. Peabody, which had only four hits, also had four costly errors in the game.
Fenwick 11, Danvers 10
In the consolation final, Fenwick never trailed but was unable to put any distance between themselves and a pesky Falcons team. The Crusaders led, 11-6, in the sixth inning, but Danvers closed to within one at 11-10 before Fenwick settled down.
Mikayla Porcaro hit a grand slam, and Lucianna Mastromatteo hit a two-run smash that staked the Crusaders to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Peabody 6, Fenwick 5
The Crusaders let a four-run lead and its tournament hopes slip away as the Tanners roared back to tie the game at 5-5 with four runs in the fourth. Peabody then took its first and only lead of the day in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Crawford. The Crusaders had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but Zammer made a huge game-saving catch on a deep ball to center field. Crawford had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. The Crusaders had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but Dawe got out of the jam.
