LYNN — The number of Lynn homeowners whose homes were seized by lenders rose by nearly a quarter compared to a year ago, according to new data from The Warren Group, the Boston-based real estate tracker.
From January through April, 31 homeowners lost their house through foreclosure, up from 25 for the same period a year, a 24 percent increase.
In addition, the number of petitions, the first step in the foreclosure process, rose by 37 percent from January through April to 89, up from 65 for the period a year ago, a 37 percent hike.
There was some good news in the April data for Lynn. The number of homeowners who forfeited their homes through foreclosure fell to 9 in April, down from 12 for the same month one year ago, a 25 percent dip.
Still, the number of foreclosure petitions in April more than doubled to 28, up from 17, a 65 percent hike
“Lenders are still processing a backlog so it is unlikely that we will see a dramatic decrease in the number anytime this year,” said Timothy Warren, CEO of The Warren Group.
Statewide, lenders have foreclosed on 1,944 deeds homes since January a 52 percent increase from the 1,280 filed through April 2015.
