LYNN — Randy Spearing was arraigned in Lynn District Court Wednesday after allegedly slashing a man repeatedly with a box cutter.
The 49-year-old Lynn resident was arrested on Tuesday for the assault last Saturday at the Shell station on the Lynnway. He is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on June 8.
Police were called to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston last Saturday to meet with the victim, a 34-year-old Lowell man. Hospital staff told police that the victim had been stabbed in the face, but the injuries were not life-threatening, according to the police report.
The victim told police that he was driving on the Lynnway in his work truck with two co-workers, when he pulled into the gas station for cigarettes. He parked next to a vehicle that was at the gas pump. As Spearing pumped fuel, he yelled at the victim, saying that he parked too close to his car, the report said.
Words were exchanged between the two before Spearing approached him while he was sitting in his truck. He said Spearing wanted to fight him so he exited his vehicle to defend himself. He was then hit in the face by Spearing. The victim thought he was only punched, but then saw the razor in Spearing’s hand, according to the report.
He told police that Spearing kept slashing him with the weapon, cutting him in the arm and the back as he fled. The victim then got in his truck and drove to the hospital, fearing he was dying from his injuries. He also stated that he didn’t know if Spearing was following him to try to finish him off with a gun, police said.
Police observed as the victim, with help from a nurse, removed the bandage on his face, revealing a severe laceration. The wound went through the tissue and stretched from his left ear lobe to his bottom lip. His right arm also had a small laceration and his back had one deep enough to reveal white, fatty tissue, according to the report.
Based on the store’s surveillance videos, officers were able to identify Spearing. He faces charges of assault with intent to commit murder, mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Police did not identify the victim.
