LYNN — The Lynn Public Library is cruising into summer with a special incentive for school vacation reading.
The annual summer reading program this season will feature a Read & Ride Contest sponsored by the Massachusetts Knights of Pythias and the Friends of the Lynn Public Library.
Lynn students entering grades one through five that complete the library summer program could win a new bicycle and helmet. Two bicycles will be raffled off at each grade level.
“To be eligible, all they have to do is pass in their log,” said Susan Cronin, children’s librarian.
Completed logs will be due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12. The drawing will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18. Readers will also be invited to the annual Ice Cream Social at City Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m.
The children’s room will offer story time each Friday morning and every other Monday.
Carole Finn-Weidman will perform as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” at the library July 27 at 11 a.m. She will read aloud to the children, and sing songs and also appear as Peter Pan Aug. 18 at 11 a.m.
Cronin said more than 150 families visit the children’s department daily during the summer.
The library also offers adult and young adult summer reading programs. The young adult program is geared for teens in grade six through 12, and the adult program is for adults 18 and older.
“For every book they read, they submit a book review and it counts as a raffle ticket,” said Theresa Hurley, library director.
A drawing will be held each week. Adults can win gift certificates to local restaurants. Prizes for young adults include gift cards to various stores and movie tickets.
At the end of the program, the adult and young adult reviews will be used to raffle off an iPad.
Many of the books on the summer reading lists are also available to borrow in e-edition and can be rented for free with a library card. Monthly book club meetings will be held for adults.
Throughout the summer, the library hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays it will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on weekends.
