The North Shore Navigators headed to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday to face the Sharks, looking for their first win of the season, but fell short, losing 8-4, despite taking an early lead.
In the first inning, the Navigators took an early lead. Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) scored on a wild pitch, giving the Navigators a 1-0 lead. The Navigators would later extend that lead after Alex Brickman (Sienna College) drove in Nick DiBenedetto (Trinity College) and shortly after added to the lead when Mack Nathanson (Wofford) hit a single, driving in Brickman.
The Sharks managed to get a couple back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2, but shortly after, the Navigators went up 4-2 after a a throwing error brought in MacDaniel Singleton (Salem State University).
The pitching for the Navs also helped keep them in the game. Cam Lanzilli (UMass Lowell) got the start and struck out four over five innings. Lanzilli leads the Navs with 14 strikeouts on the year. Brett Morrison (Lock Haven University) made his team debut and also fanned four.
Going into the top of the eighth, the Navigators held a 4-2 lead, until Martha’s Vineyard’s Alex Lewis smacked a two-run homer to tie it up. From there, the Sharks took over. They grabbed the momentum and ran up the score to 8-4.
The Navigators are back in action on Thursday June 9 playing the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs beginning at 6:35 p.m. The next home game will be a Wayne Alarm Firework Friday game on June 10 where they will face the Nashua Silver Knights. First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
