Drew Delsignore smacked a game-tying home run in the seventh for the Navs.
The North Shore Navigators fought against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs in their first meeting of the season, but the team was left still searching for their first victory, falling 8-3 to Wachusett on the road.
Regardless of the final score, the Navigators played well and held pace with the Dirt Dawgs until late in the game. Early in the contest, the Navigators took a 2-1 lead thanks to a Riley Herold (Nebraska-Omaha) double. Alex Brickman (Siena College) and Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) scored on the hit.
Brickman was one of the best offensive performers on the night for the Navigators. The designated hitter went 2-for-4 and raised his batting average to an even .300. He also came in to pitch in the eighth inning. He surrendered a solo home run, but managed to strike out the side after that.
Drew Delsignore (Mercyhurst Northeast) had one of the biggest moments of the game for the Navigators. In the top of the seventh inning, with the team trailing 3-2, he led off the inning with a solo home run, his first of the season, knotting the game at three.
Nick Malatesta (St. Joseph’s College of Maine) got the start and gave a solid performance. He went 5 1/3 innings and struck out four. Malatesta allowed only three runs, earning a no-decision. Over the course of the season, Malatesta has pitched 10 1/3 innings, allowing only the three runs and striking out five.
Unfortunately, the Navigators could not keep the Dirt Dawgs in check late. Wachusett was powered by four home runs, ultimately the difference in the game.
The Navigators will return to action on Friday, June 10 for a home game against the Nashua Silver Knights. The game will be the first of the Wayne Alarm “Firework Friday” Games at Fraser Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
