Tedesco Cup all about the camaraderie

MARBLEHEAD — Cy Kilgore and Bob Carlson began playing as a twosome in the Tedesco Cup 29 years ago, and they have won the tournament three times.

And even though they didn’t win the member-guest tournament this year — the cup went to Michael Tyrrell and Robert Jordan (Blue Fox Run, with a two-day net of 127 — it hardly matters. The camaraderie and the competition are more important anyway, they say.

So do others who compete. Brendan and Ed Locke (Kelley Greens of Nahant) finished in a tie for second in the team gross category with Michael Zmetrovich and Charles Woodworth (The Country Club, Brookline), each at 143. Both were two strokes behind Carangelo Cup winners Mike O’Connor and Michael Sweeney (Woodlands Club), who had a 141.

“Everybody wants to win,” said Brendan Locke, a former hockey player for Swampscott High. “But it’s just coming here and playing that’s fun. “It’s a great tournament. It’s almost like a reunion every year.”
Kilgore agreed.

“It’s always a treat to bring a super guy like Bob up here (he lives in North Carolina these days),” said Kilgore. The two met 29 years ago when they both worked at Firemen’s Fund Insurance.

“We were just two sports nuts working together,” said Kilgore. “Then he moved, and started his own courier service (Dash Courier), but he’s never missed one of these since he moved down there.”

This year, Carlson made sure he got up here — and stayed up here for longer than just the two days it took to play the tournament.

“My daughter lives in Brookline, and she just had our first grandchild,” he said.

There was a three-way tie for second in the net, with Jim and Nick Katsos, O’Connor and Sweeney, and J. Scott Salisbury and William Schneider, each with 130.
