SWAMPSCOTT — The Wyoma Little League all-stars kept their season going with a 9-1 win over Winthrop Saturday afternoon in Swampscott.
Wyoma got the burner turned up high with one out in the top of the first. Anthony Marino banged an Aidan Cash fastball over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead, and the kids from Wyoma never trailed.
Christian Moran was the beneficiary of the Marino homer, and his mates pushed another run home in the top of the third. Steven Galatis walked, moved up on a single by Marino, and scored on a Winthrop error.
Wyoma put the game out of reach with six in the top of the third. Galatis reached on an error, moved up on a fielder’s choice, and came in on a single by Aaron O’Connor.
O’Connor’s hit was the end of the day for Cash on the hill, as he gave way to Sean Montgomery. Things did not go well for Montgomery. He plunked Tyler Wilson to start things off. O’Connor, Moran, Wilson, Jason Donohue, and Jesse Maggs all scored, and Montgomery gave way to Hunter Kennedy, who got the final out with Wyoma on top, 8-0.
Wyoma tacked on its ninth run in the top of the sixth off Kennedy, who gave up a single to start things to O’Connor. O’Connor scored on a two-bagger by Donohue.
Winthrop finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, getting a single run off of Tyler Wilson, the second Wyoma pitcher.
Winthrop’s Tyler Rockefeller walked to start the bottom of the sixth and he moved up on a stolen base. Rockefeller came around on a single by Cam Martin. Wilson retired J. P. Giorgio with two runners on, and Wyoma moved to 3-1.
Wyoma pitchers only allowed four hits Saturday, two singles by Winthrop’s Colin Kinsella, and singles from Martin and Cash. Wyoma skipper Rick Anderson said he liked the way his team came to play Saturday afternoon.
“We figured out their pitchers, the kids played hard and we were able to put some really good at-bats together,” Anderson said. “Their guy (Cash) kept us off-balance a bit, but we seemed to have better at-bats the second time around against him, and we were able to put up a bunch of runs.”
“That homer by Marino was a great way to get things started for our team today,” Anderson said.
Winthrop manager Tom Montgomery said he was happy about the effort his team put out Saturday and all through the tournament.
“Those guys (Wyoma) hit the ball hard they’re a very good team. We didn’t hit the ball as well today as we did in some of the other games,” Montgomery said. “The kids had a great run, 2-2 in the tournament, I’m really proud of them and we wish Wyoma luck moving on.”
