SALEM — The trial of two Saugus residents accused of sexually assaulting an intoxicated 16-year-old girl while the incident was recorded and shared on Snapchat started Tuesday.
Rashad Deihim, 21, and Kailyn Bonia, 20, have pleaded not guilty. They contend the sex was consensual, and are standing trial in Essex Superior Court in Salem before Judge Kathe Tuttman. The Item does not name victims of sexual assault.
Deihim and Bonia were indicted in 2014 for two counts of assault to rape, four counts of indecent assault and battery on person over 14, kidnapping and posing a child in the nude.
Earlier this year, Timothy Cyckowski, 19, of Saugus pleaded guilty in Lynn Juvenile Court. He admitted to sharing a video he had taken of the girl being sexually assaulted on Snapchat. The alleged attack took place behind the Waybright Elementary School in Saugus.
Cyckowski was ordered to be committed to the Department of Youth Service’s custody until age 20. He will then be placed on probation for four years. He must also receive substance abuse treatment and have no contact with the victim or witnesses.
His father, Matthew Cyckowski, 39, pleaded guilty to willfully misleading a police investigation. He was sentenced to two years on probation.
Testifying on the first day of the trial was Michelle Enos. She is the mother of the then-16-year-old girl, Sydnee Enos, who received the Snapchat videos after they were shared by Cyckowski. Sydnee showed the videos to her mother, after taking screenshots of the video. Authorities learned of the alleged assault after her father called police.
Sydnee Enos is expected to take the stand today when the trial resumes at 9 a.m.
Also testifying on Tuesday were the two Saugus police officers who responded to the alleged assault, Kevin Nichols and Timothy Fawcett. The two officers found the victim.
Medical personnel from Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, where the victim was taken for treatment, will testify on Wednesday, but it is not clear on when the girl will take the stand. There is no video to be presented, as Snapchat recordings disappear after viewed, but still photos may be shown at some point. The prosecution expects to finish presenting its case by the end of the week.
