SAUGUS — One woman doesn’t seem to want to make America great again.
Shaquira Niles, 22, of Lynn, is facing charges after allegedly swiping a Donald Trump sign from a Main Street home on Monday, said Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti, assistant chief of police.
At about 11:44 a.m., the resident of 39 Main St. called police to report she had observed a woman taking a campaign sign for the Republican presidential nominee from a porch window. The woman told police she had been inside when she saw someone come up to her home and remove the banner, valued at about $35, Giorgetti said.
The resident was able to provide the make and registration of the vehicle Niles was driving. The car was stopped at Saugus Center by officers. As a result of the investigation and stop, she has been summoned to appear in court on charges of larceny and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Giorgetti said.
The sign was recovered and returned to the owner. Giorgetti said Niles didn’t give any indication of her political affiliation or an explanation for why she took the sign.
This isn’t the first local incident of a Trump sign being stolen. In Marblehead, the candidate’s campaign sign has been stolen eight times from a Harbor Avenue home. Marblehead Police released a surveillance video of an unidentified woman who could be seen taking it. Giorgetti said he doesn’t know if the two incidents are related.
Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, also has her detractors on the North Shore. In Peabody, vandalism was reported to one of her campaign signs at about noon on Monday at a Lowell Street residence.
