Bishop Fenwick’s Isaiah Cashwell-Doe ran for two scores in Friday night’s win over Austin Prep.

After last week’s 23-6 loss to Archbishop Williams, the Bishop Fenwick football team was hungry to get back on the win column.
“It wasn’t so much the loss but the way we played,” Fenwick coach Dave Woods said. “We didn’t prepare last week and we didn’t play well. Nobody likes to lose. It was about having a consistent week of practice and we’re hoping to repeat that again.”
Fenwick’s efforts in practice this week paid dividends on Friday night as the Crusaders (4-1) marched to a 35-0 win over Austin Prep.
A trio of first quarter touchdowns gave Fenwick more than enough cushion for an early lead. Isaiah Cashwell-Doe’s 38-yard touchdown run gave Fenwick a 7-0 lead. That was followed by a pair of touchdowns in Luke Hufnagel’s 35-yard interception return and Corey Bright’s one-yard run to make it 21-0.
“Austin Prep is the type of team that can chew up the clock,” Woods said. “They got a few first downs and then we stopped them. After that we got on a role on defense, we blocked a punt and our defense stepped up and carried us today.”
Fenwick continued to find the end zone in the second quarter, as Bright scored his second touchdown of the night on a 29-yard run. Bright finished the game with three carries for 63 yards. Minutes later, Cashwell-Doe scored his second touchdown of the game with a three yard run to give Fenwick a 35-0 lead. Cashwell-Doe finished with six carries for 149 yards.
“They had a great game and they were locked in from the start,” Woods said of Bright and Cashwell-Doe. “They wanted to make amends for last week and they were ready to go.”
Up next for the Crusaders is a match-up against Arlington Catholic next Friday night at Fenwick.
“We’re hoping to get another good week of practice,” Woods said. “We want to come out and play with the same attitude we had this week.”
Gloucester 48, Winthrop 6
The Fishermen pounded Winthrop at East Boston Stadium to improve to 4-1.
Gloucester scored on its first drive of the game, as Jermaine Edward capped off a 10-play, 76-yard drive with a one-yard carry with two minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Vikings fumbled a snap on the first play of their next drive, and the Fishermen recovered at Winthrop’s 37-yard-line. Gloucester’s Marc Smith, who recovered the fumble, followed up with a 37-yard touchdown run on the first play of the ensuing drive as Gloucester went up 14-0 just 20 seconds after its first score.
Gloucester quarterback Nate Young hooked up with Smith for a 41-yard touchdown pass early in the second. Winthrop responded as quarterback Chris Zuffante hit Jon Gonzalez with a 4-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-6.
Gloucester’s Christian Sanfilippo rushed for 216 yards on 16 carries, his third straight game with over 100 yards rushing, with 55 of those coming on a touchdown run in the second quarter to make it 27-6, his first of three touchdowns on the night. Sanfilippo reached 2,200 career rush yards, good for second all-time in school history.

GIRLS SOCCER
Arlington Catholic 1, St. Mary’s 0
St. Mary’s struggled to find the back of the net as Arlington Catholic’s direct kick in the game’s 20th minute was the deciding factor in the contest.
Morgan Mackey and Caitlyn Foley each played a strong game for the Spartans. Emily Stephenson finished with 10 saves on the afternoon.
“I think we’re in a little bit of a rut,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “We’re having trouble scoring. We started off the season scoring goals. We played with great rhythm today but we can’t put the ball in net.”
St. Mary’s (6-4) will look to get back in the win column when the Spartans host Mystic Valley at Manning Field on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“We’re hoping we can bounce back and get back to doing what we did in the start of the season,” Foley said. “Our league is very tough and balanced.”

Peabody coach Pam Grant credited Hailee Monies for “a strong game at mid feeding the forwards” and Mallory LeBlanc for “showing off her stick skills dribbling many times for 50 yards.” Peabody had a handful of opportunities to score with six corners on the afternoon.
BOYS SOCCER
St. John’s Prep 0, St. John’s Shrewsbury 0
Goalkeeper Jack Sorenson turned in an outstanding performance in goal but the Eagles couldn’t find the back of the net on offense. Sorenson finished the contest with three saves and earned his third shutout of the season. Center backs Kevin Casey and David Luongo and midfielder Tony Najim also played a strong game for the Eagles.
“It was a really good game,” Prep coach Dave Crowell said. “We played well. It was a game that was mostly played in the midfield. Although we didn’t score, we did do a lot of good things. We’re getting better each game.”
The Eagles (5-3-2) are back in action when they visit Malden Catholic on Saturday at 1 p.m. “We’re going with a lot of different guys tomorrow. We’re a little tired and beat up so it’ll be a whole team effort tomorrow.”
