REVERE — Two officers are on leave from the Revere Police Department pending an investigation after one was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of child abuse.

Marcos R. Garcia, of Saugus, was arrested Saturday by Massachusetts State Police. He is expected to be arraigned Thursday in Chelsea District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a child causing injury.

According to a news release from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the evidence suggests that Garcia, 32, physically abused the 5-year-old child of a woman he was romantically involved with.

The child has been placed in the custody of a family member, the release said. The name and gender of the child are not being released.

Revere Police Lt. Amy O’Hara wrote in an email to The Item that Garcia has been with the department since August 2013. He is currently on paid administrative leave, she said.

The department also referred to a statement from Mayor Brian Arrigo’s Office, which said that two Revere police officers have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. The investigation is being conducted by Massachusetts State Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the statement said.

On May 23, 2016, Garcia was one seven Revere officers awarded by Arrigo for acts of heroism. Garcia, along with two other officers, received medals for removing two victims from a motor vehicle and providing CPR at the Wonderland Marketplace on May 31, 2015. The medals are awarded at a ceremony each year.
