The Bishop Fenwick girls hockey team scored two goals with under eight minutes to go Saturday to storm back and earn a hard-fought 2-2 tie with cross-town rival Peabody at McVann O’Keefe Ice Rink.
Peabody jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by North Reading sisters Sammi Mirasolo (8:00) and Cassie Mirasolo (5:23). Lynnfield’s Mae Norton earned an assist on the first goal, while Sammi Mirasolo and Caroline Buckley of Lynnfield were credited with assists on the second.
The Tanners dominated the middle period, but could not get one past freshman goalie Cailyn Wesley, over the final 35 minutes.
“She plays aggressively and comes out which we didn’t take advantage of,” Peabody coach Michelle Roach said. “We hit a lot of posts tonight, and honestly, I don’t know how she made some of the saves she did, she was just very good tonight.”
With a little under eight minute to play, Fenwick captain Meaghan Carney was in the right place at the right time on a line change as the puck deflected to her as she stepped onto the ice outside the blue line. Her shot went wide, but bounced around in heavy traffic in front of the net to Amanda Blanchette, who tucked it home past Peabody goalie Jenny Collins to cut the deficit in half to 2-1. Allie Charette and Carney picked up assists.
With 1:27 to go, the Crusaders pulled Wesley for an extra skater, and the decision paid off. After an off-balance shot by Carney, Blanchette poked the puck past Collins, who was screened on the play, with 11.1 seconds left in regulation.
“After our last four or five games without a win, this felt like a win for us,” Fenwick coach Doug Anderson said. “We have practiced getting that sixth skater into the net and Caitlin (Carney) did just that. A game like this is exactly what we needed to boost our confidence.”
Oliver Ames 6 Fenwick 1
The Crusaders didn’t get on the board until the third period when Meghan Carney set up her sister Caitlin for the only Fenwick tally.
“That’s a very good team (Oliver Ames) definitely a quality team, a future tournament team and they got us today,” coach Doug Anderson said. “They have a very talented group of girls, certainly.”
Fenwick will be looking to pick up some wins this week, on Wednesday they play Medford, and have a makeup game with Oakmont on Friday night.
Marblehead 5 Oakmont 2
Saturday, the Magicians scored four times in the third period to lock up a 5-2 win in a game played.
Oakmont went up 1-0 in the first, and Marblehead tied it up in the second on a goal by Delaney.
That tie score evaporated quickly once the puck was dropped in the third, Peters scored a couple and Moroney also notched a pair to put the guests up 5-1, with the home team scoring the final goal of the game with 34 seconds left in the game.
Hudak said the team really bore down in the third and picked up a good win
“We definitely came out great in the third period and scored four goals, we battled hard in the first two periods but didn’t score,” Hudak said.
BOYS HOCKEY
Winthrop 6 Peabody 1
In Peabody Saturday, the Vikings got three points each from Charlie Page and Henry Brooks. Page scored twice and had a helper, and Brooks had a goals and two assists.
“We’ve always prided ourselves on being a good defensive team first, and an offensive team second, and that’s how we’re winning, great goaltending and great defensive play,” Winthrop coach Dale Dunbar said. “Hopefully we can keep it going, we have a big game with Marblehead on Wednesday and then we face Saugus next Saturday.”
St. Mary’s 3 Matignon 1
The Spartans welcomed back their team captain Dante Marabito for their road game Saturday night against the Warriors. Marabito chipped in with an assist and goalie Kevin McMullen was solid between the pipes in his second start of the season.
Anthony Buono scored twice for St. Mary’s and Colin Reddy also sank one for the winners.
“It was a really good team win for our guys,” coach Mark Lee said. “It went down to the wire and we were able to pull it out at the end. We outshot them 37-11, their goalie was hot, but we were able to come out with a win.”
The Spartans have an important league game coming Wednesday night when they travel to Arlington Catholic.
Danvers 5 Marblehead 1
At Salem State Saturday, the Falcons stopped a 3-game losing streak against the Magicians thanks to good work on the power play, including a pair of goals from Tom Mento.
Marblehead trailed 3-0 to start the third, and quickly fell behind 4-0 when Rob Tibbetts scored 96 seconds into the final period. The Magicians got on the board with their own man advantage strike when Braden Haley fed James McCarthy with 9:44 remaining.
That goal was it on offense for Marblehead (6-6-2), and Mento picked up his second goal with 5:29 left to account for the final score.
