Peabody boys, Beverly girls shine at NEC track meet

BOSTON — The Peabody boys and girls indoor track teams came within just two points of sweeping the Northeastern Conference track meet at the Reggie Lewis Center Friday evening. The Peabody boys cruised to a win with 105 points but the Beverly girls (105) snuck by the Tanners (103) to claim the NEC title.

In the girls meet, Saugus’ Haley Dennis (7.36 seconds) bested Classical’s Agnes Bangura (7.36) in the 55-meter dash. Beverly’s India Ingemi (41.57) topped Peabody’s Amanda Andrews (42.33) and Marblehead’s Lydia Bongiorno (43.80) in the 300-meter race. Gloucester’s Leah Rudolph (1:38.87) took the 600 ahead of Peabody’s Emily Nelson (1:39.66).

Peabody took the top two spots in the 1000, as Sophie Anderle (3:11.44) and Lilly Brennan (3:14.29) bested Marblehead’s Alix Livermore (3:15.12).

Beverly’s Abby Walsh (5:09.30) cruised to a win in the mile, and Peabody’s Jessica Ostrowski (12:02.91) finished first in the 2-miles.

Despite coming in second in the preliminaries, Marblehead’s Clara Pollard (9.34) turned on the jets to best Gloucester’s Kaitlin Marques (9.40) in the 55-hurdles. Saugus’ Gianna Filaretos (9.52) finished third.

Beverly’s 4×200 relay team (1:51.75) bested Marblehead (1:53.20) and Peabody (1:53.51), but the Tanners’ 4×400 relay team (4:11.78) topped Beverly (4:23.70) in the next event. But the Panthers came storming back in the 4×800 (10:10.39), topping Peabody (10:19.69).

Gloucester’s Sierra Rudolph (5 feet, 4 inches) won the high jump. Swampscott’s Michelle Connor was the only other competitor to clear 5-4, coming in second, and Saugus’ Filaretos cleared 5-2 in a third-place finish. Peabody’s Gabrielle Morton dominated in the long jump with a jump of 15-07 3/4. The next-closest finisher was Beverly’s Ingemi, who jumped 14-09 1/2. Beverly’s Gracie Sparkman topped the shot put (36-01) ahead of Swampscott’s Maisie Vasquez.

On the boys side,Marblehead’s Joe Doherty (6.75) topped Revere’s Jonathan Hysenaj (6.88), while Classical’s Marcus Rivera finished just a tenth of a second behind Hysenaj for third place. Doherty’s teammate Joe Cronin (37.43) topped Danvers’ Anthony Spignese (37.82) and Classical’s Emmanuel Kalambayi (38.06) in the 300. Beverly’s Johnny Jones finished first in the 600 (1:27.13).

Peabody’s Joe Farhat (2:36.55) topped English’s Abrar Jalal (2:48.35) in the 1000. The Tanners also took the top two spots in the mile, as Marc Alperen (4:36.97) and Shane Braz (4:43.87) topped Danvers’ Andrew Moriarty (4:45.30). Claudio Rocha logged another win for Peabody, taking the 2-miles (10:10.00).

Despite placing sixth in the preliminaries, Revere’s David Sinatra (8.03) beat Salem’s Jaden Oliver (8.06) in a photo finish in the 55-hurdles.

In the relays, Marblehead (1:35.33) topped Peabody (1:36.13) in the 4×200, Beverly (3:38.78) topped the Tanners (3:44.44) and Swampscott (3:45.66) in the 4×400, and Peabody (8:51.04) bested English (9:08.87) in the 4×800.

In the field events, Swampscott’s Isaiah Bascon (5-10) topped Saugus’ Nick Silva (5-8) and English’s Juan Avelino (5-8) in the high jump. Salem’s Giovanni Guzman (19-11 1/2) and Beverly’s Tommy Adams (19-11 1/2) were neck and neck in the long jump. Peabody swept the top two spots in the shot put with Eric DeMayo (51-05 1/4) and Patrick Pang (48-04) winning first and second, respectively.

Other good performances for local teams included Classical’s Rhode Alcindor in the girls 600 (sixth, 1:48.52), Revere’s Hannah Fitzpatrick in the girls 1000 (fifth, 3:19.65), Swampscott’s Kendall Rhodes in the 55 hurdles (fifth, 9.66), Classical in the girls 4×200 relay (fourth, 1:53.51), Classical’s Jayla Blevins in the girls high jump (4-10), Revere’s Claritza Vasquez in the girls long jump (fourth, 14-04), Revere’s Rachel Shanbar in the girls shot put (fifth, 32-04 1/2), English’s Kevin Francisco in the boys 600 (fourth, 1:28.35), Swampscott’s Thomas McDevitt in the boys 1000 (fourth, 2:50.47) and Classical’s Adam Washington in the boys high jump (fifth, 5-6).
