School Roundup: Cathedral downs Spartan boys, girls

The St. Mary’s girls basketball team clawed back into the game, but eventually fell to Cathedral at home Monday night, 54-42.

The Spartans fell behind by 14 points early in the second quarter, but fought back to come within four. But the Panthers were able to pull away late and seal the win.

Mia Nowicki played well for St. Mary’s, putting up 16 points and dishing out six assists. Temi Falayi added 11 points, and Olivia Nazaire (nine points) was big on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds.

St. Mary’s (11-6) takes on Catholic Central League foe Austin Prep Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cathedral 56, St. Mary’s 46

The Spartans fell on the road Monday night behind solid efforts from Jonny Mercado (15 points) and Stephen Fama (14 points).

St. Mary’s will host a rematch of last year’s Division 4 state championship as Maynard comes to town Friday night.

BOYS TRACK
Marblehead 60.5, English 25.5

English’s Juan Avelino took the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and the Bulldogs swept the 1000-meter race as Abrar Jalal (2 minutes, 54.9 seconds), Kevin Francisco (3:03.9) and Michael Falasca (3:11.1) took the top three spots. English also won the 4×400 relay.

Winners for Marblehead included Ryan Dumais in the shot put (43-0), Thomas Huber in the 55-meter hurdles (8.2), Jaason Lopez in the 55 (6.5), Joe Cronin in the 300 (40.5), Zach Phelan in the 600 (1:38.2), Elrik Larson in the mile (5:14.3) and Phelan Tinti-Kane in the 2-mile (12:36.6), who barely bested teammate Ian Strothers (12:36.9).

Peabody 61, Winthrop 24

The Tanners won all but two events, as Winthrop’s Nikolas Beshere won the 2-mile (11:14.9) and the 4×400 team took the top spot.

Winners for Peabody were Isaiah Knight in the high jump (5-7), Randdye Ramos in the shot put (43-7 1/2), Kemari Jackson in the 45-hurdles (7.0), Jay Araps in the 45 (5.5), Jacob Hawthrone in the 300 (41.6), Troy Cappos in the 600 (1:45.1), Ryan Buchanan in the 1000 (3:05.9) and Jacob Farhat in the mile (5:11.5), who just edged Winthrop’s Will Holden (5:11.8).

GIRLS TRACK

Marblehead 74, English 11

The Bulldogs ran into a strong Marblehead team on the road, and Elizabeth Rozon grabbed the only win for English in the high jump (4-6). Rozon also logged a second-place finish in the 55-hurdles.

Winners for Marblehead were Chloe Ferrucci in the shot put (31-7 1/2), Clara Pollard in the 55-hurdles (9.2), Gabriella Mark in the 55 (7.7), Lily Gregory in the 300 (46.0), Eve Rice in the 600 (1:51.9), Alix Livermore in the 1000 (3:22.6), Mia Forster in the mile (6:04.8) and Michaela Haliotis in the 2-mile (14:41.9).

Peabody 60, Winthrop 21

Winthrop’s Gianna Massa took the shot put (32-4 1/2) and her teammate Camilla Miranda-Llovera won the 2-mile (13:34.4), but other than that, it was all Peabody. Winners for the Tanners included Alexa Flewelling in the high jump (4-10), Emily Bellavance in the 45-hurdles (7.2), Taylor Correggio in the 45 (6.2), Lexi Bettencourt in the 300 (47.6), Amy Drover in the 600 (1:55.6), Nicole Ruggiero in the 1000 (3:30.9) and Ally Barrett in the 2-mile (6:01.5).
