Saugus High School announced that Joe Luis has been hired as the varsity baseball coach for the Sachems. Luis replaces Steve Freker, who departed Saugus to coach at Malden.
Luis is a graduate of Peabody High School and UMass Lowell, where he was a four-year varsity starter for the baseball team. He also served as the catching and pitching coach at UMass Lowell from 1994-1998. Luis signed with the Red Sox organization as a free agent and played for three seasons in Boston’s minor league system.
