Louis Ellis drained three of four free throws with under 10 seconds to play to lead the Lynnfield boys to victory.
The Lynnfield boys basketball team rebounded from an ugly loss to Newburyport the night before with an exciting, and wildly entertaining, 73-68 win over a very athletic Cardinal Spellman team.
The game that wasn’t decided until senior captain Louis Ellis drained three of four free throws with under 10 seconds to play.
Ellis (24 points) and Zachary Shone (17 points) were immense in the final quarter, with Ellis pouring in nine points and Shone with eight.
The Pioneers trailed by one going into the fourth quarter but outscored Spellman 25-19 to secure the win.
“That was a really good high school game against a really good team,” said Lynnfield head coach Scott MacKenzie. “It was a matchup nightmare for us, One of the things we said between the third and the fourth that we can’t stop a nosebleed right now, we needed to go back to having it be a track meet, wanted to open it up at both ends, and that’s a good win for us.”
Senior Bryant Dana (12 points) and junior point guard Billy Arseneault (10 points) also hit double figures, while senior captain Mike Carangelo (5 points) came up big with a couple of key baskets and rebounds late in the game, including an old-fashioned 3-pointer to help put Lynnfield over the top.
The Pioneers (16-2) travel to Melrose today hoping to event the score with Raiders, who are the only other team to beat Lynnfield this year.
