School Roundup: Johnson scores four goals in Swampscott win

Mike Johnson scored four goals to lead the way for the Swampscott boys hockey team on Monday, as the Big Blue topped Agawam, 9-1. Andrew Dove added three scores in the win, and Louis Olivieri and Jack Poska also found the back of the net for Swampscott. Olivieri added four assists to his performance. For Poska, the goal was the first of his career. Swampscott finishes the regular season at 17-3.

BOYS HOCKEY

Marblehead 3, Winthrop 3

At Salem State’s Rockett Arena, Braden Haley netted a pair of goals for the Magicians.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 51, Marlborough 30

At Malden Catholic, the Spartans bounce back with a win in the consolation round of the Comcast Board 27 Tournament.

Revere 69, Arlington Catholic 60

Curtis High finished the win with 28 points and five rebounds to lead the Patriots. Mass Joof contributed with a double-double at 14 points and 10 rebounds. Revere advances to the championship game of the Patton Tournament on Wednesday, against Winchester.

Marblehead 68, Tewksbury 54

The Magicians (18-3) notched a win in the opening round of the Phil Sheridan Memorial Tournament on Monday night at Marblehead High, advancing to the final on Wednesday.

Patrick Bugler led the scoring charge for Marblehead with 22 points, while Derek Marino added 11 points and Bo Millett contributed 12 rebounds in the win.

The Magicians will close out the regular season on Wednesday night against Pope John in the final of the Sheridan Tournament.

Amesbury 71, Swampscott 37

A slow start didn’t help, but the Big Blue were outplayed in every aspect Monday on the road.

“(Amesbury) was hungrier, took better care of the ball, and they wanted it more,” said Swampscott coach Justin Fucile, who added that he wants the team to end on a high note in the final game against Saugus Wednesday.

Jake McIntire was a bright spot, putting up 14 points in three quarters.

Masconomet 65, Bishop Fenwick 64

At Beverly, the Crusaders lose a nail-biter in the consolation round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic. Fenwick’s Isaiah Cashwell-Doe led all scorers with 28 points. Cashwell-Doe was named to the all-tournament team. The loss eliminated Fenwick (8-11) from contention for a state tournament berth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bishop Fenwick 51, Beverly 41

At Beverly, Fenwick (14-8) gets the win in the consolation round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic. Sophomore Jaxson Nadeau led the Crusaders with 17 points.

SWIMMING

MIAA Division 1 state championship

Peabody’s Conor McCarthy wrapped up a strong season with a 23rd-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and a 34th-place finish in the 100 freestyle in the MIAA Boys Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championship at Boston University over the weekend.

“Conor competed against the top swimmers in the state, many of which are heading to some strong college swimming programs,” said Peabody coach Maureen Shea.  “His finishes were just seconds apart from those at the top.  He had two very good races.”

For the girls, Peabody’s Kirstin Currie broke a 21-year-old Tanners record in the 200 freestyle, by just over 1/10th of a second, finishing 14th with a time of 2 minutes, 2.54 seconds.  She also came in 23rd overall in the 100 freestyle.

In other individual races, Millie Teague came in 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.06), and 23rd in the 200 individual medley (2:22.65).  Senior Captain Cailin Currie came in 21st in the 500 freestyle (5:39.88).

The 200 medley relay “sisters” team of Cailin and Kirstin Currie and Cana and Millie Teague came in 16th place (1:58.93).  The same team came in 28th place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.40)  The 400 freestyle relay team of Cailin Currie, Sofia Medina, Nicole O’Neill, and Cana Teague came in 28th (4:27.43).

This meet, with that of McCarthy at the MIAA Boys Division I State Championship, concludes the season for Peabody.
