MALDEN — Malden Mayor Gary Christenson will deliver his fifth State of the City address this morning at Anthony’s in Malden with the traditional event hosted by the Malden Chamber of Commerce.

The breakfast event begins with a meal at 7:30, followed by the mayor’s remarks and presentation. Those expected to attend include municipal and state government officials, local business owners, civic and religious leaders and many Malden residents.

Christenson is expected to include a review of the past year’s accomplishments and achievements in the city of Malden, which has seen the city improve and enhance infrastructure, particularly in its streets, roadways and parks as well as the construction and opening of a new, state-of-the-art Malden Police Station on Eastern Avenue.

The mayor is also expected to address strides made in the city’s public schools, both in academics, management and its athletic program, and in local commerce, where many new businesses have arrived and opened in the city of many varied types in the past year.

Christenson will also look to the future and customarily has key announcements. One of the major ones could be the start of demolition of the former Malden Government Center complex at 200 Pleasant St., which includes the former police station,

This past Friday more than 100 city employees gathered for an official “farewell ceremony” where U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), a Malden resident, and Christenson talked about a new beginning for Malden Square with the removal of the former City Hall and the reopening of Pleasant Street.

The mayor is also expected to address other coming initiatives including more infrastructure plans, redevelopment as a whole in the community and even the rebirth of a plan to bring a professional stadium to Malden Square. A review of many city departments’ achievements is also expected.

Limited tickets are available through the Chamber of Commerce, maldenchamber.org.
