LYNN — Goalie Jack Stafford was named the Lynn Jets Most Valuable Player at Tuesday night’s banquet at Spinelli’s.
Stafford backboned the Jets — the public school hockey team that encompasses Classical, English and Tech — to an 11-6-3 regular-season record and a 5-1 win over St. Joseph’s Prep in the Division 3 North tournament. He had a 1.94 goals-against average in just over 19 games this season.
Stafford was one of several players recognized for their contributions to what was one of the most successful seasons the team has had in at least four years.
“We won a game in the state tournament for the first time in four or five years,” said coach Joe Conlon.
Conlon said that while every season takes on its own theme, this one was all about the seniors.
“I really liked this group, and I’m going to miss them,” said Conlon. “I hope that the juniors who are coming up will make this their team, these way these guys did.”
Ryan Clark and Steve Patrie were named co-defensive MVPs while Brian Clougherty (10 goals, 12 assists) was honored as the team’s leading scorer.
Jonathan Kosmas received two awards: the Hustle Award and Scholar Athlete, an honor he shared with Travis Ryan.
Connor Gallant was presented with the Character Award, which is modeled after college hockey’s Hobey Baker Award; Cody Roork won the coaches’ award; and Johnny DiFilippo was named most improved player.
Four players received scholar-athlete awards in honor of the late Jason Ryan Haggerty, who died in October of 2015. They are Patrie, Gallant, Clark and Stafford.
