School Roundup: Lynnfield baseball remains undefeated

With a 9-6 win at Georgetown, the Lynnfield baseball team remains undefeated at 11-0.

Mike Stellato was 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and two RBI Also starring for Lynnfield were Mike Federico (3-for-4, 3 singles, a double, 2 RBI), Jonathan Luders (single, double, RBI) and Andre Padovani, who knocked in the game-winner as part of a five-run fourth inning.

Justin Juliano went five innings for the win, with Fernando Gonzalez going the final two for the save.

“It was a heck of a ballgame,” said Lynnfield coach John O’Brien. “Everybody on both sides hit the ball really well.

“It was nice to go up there and escape with a win.”

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 3, Matignon 1

Pitcher Luis Vidal tossed six innings, allowing one run and tallying seven strikeouts. “He (Vidal) certainly gave us what we needed on the mound,” Spartans coach Derek Dana said. Bobby Alcock earned the save. St. Mary’s took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when John Mulready doubled home Lee Pacheco. In the fifth, the Spartans added two more runs when Pacheco scored on an outfield error and a sacrifice fly from Anthony Nikolakakis brought home Josh Mateo. “Pitching has been very good,” Dana said. “Defense was pretty good, still some things we can clean up. We just have to start battling better at the plate. We’re capable of much more.” St. Mary’s (8-2) hosts Austin Prep on Sunday.

Peabody 7, Xaverian 2

The Tanners were led by a strong performance on the mound from Jake Zeuli. Peabody improves to 9-3 with the win.

Tech 14, Chelsea 4

At Chelsea Richie Mateo was the story of the day, going 2-for-2, with both hits being doubles, and knocking in a run. Mateo also pitched six strong innings, giving up four hits and striking out 13, to get the win.

“He had a pretty good day all round,” said Tech (3-6) coach Mike Kenney.

Jhoan Ortega led the offense, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and four runs.

“We’ve had a couple of tough games, so we needed this one,” said Kenney. “It was a (Commonwealth Conference) win, too, which is good.”

SOFTBALL

Danvers 4, Saugus 3 (F/11)

Caitlyn Wood tossed all eleven innings in the circle and tallied 11 strikeouts for Saugus. Sadie DiCenso went 3-for-5 at the plate, Alex Almquist went 2-for-4 with a RBI, D.J. Munafo went 2-for-5 with a RBI. Saugus (4-6) looks to bounce back today against Winthrop.

Beverly 17. Somerville 0 (F/5)
Jackie Pia struck out five, and surrendered 3 hits as the panthers belted 16 hits. Pia went 2-4 with a double and triple and three RBI.  Julia Pitman went 2-5 with a two run triple and three run home run while Molly Pierce went 1-3 with two runs scored. Panthers are now 6-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Swampscott 7, Winthrop 3

The Big Blue moved to 8-3 with Nick Kersten and Jack Herlihy scoring two goals each.

“It was a real good game by both sides,” said Swampscott coach Todd Pierce. “It’s the way high school lacrosse should be played.”

Also scoring for Swampscott were Andrew Dove (goal, four assists), Colin Walsh and Kyle Fitzgerald, with a goal each.

Goalie Tim Perlin made 12 saves.

Peabody 11, Medford 5

Colby Therrien (four goals), Stephen Ell (five goals, one assist), Ryan Vinagro (five assists), Tim January (two goals), Patrick Russo (15 of 20 in the faceoffs), Jake DeStefano (10 saves) were Peabody’s top performers. Peabody (4-8) hosts Danvers on Tuesday.

Xaverian 10, St. John’s Prep 6

The Eagles dropped to 4-6. Top performers were KJ Sarni (two goals), Jack Richards (two goals), Pat Keefe (two assists), PJ Lombara (one goal), Zach Harde (one goal) and Tim Tyrell (one assist). Mitchell Carpenter made 8 saves.  The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they travel to Needham.  

GIRLS LACROSSE

Peabody 11, Beverly 10 (20T)

Lauren Wolff scored the game-winner with 1:14 left in double-overtime. Colleen Crotty (three goals), Chloe Gizzi (three goals), Wolff (two goals, one assist), Kristen Bradley (one goal), Sarah Buckley (one goal) and Olivia Kiricoples (one goal) led the Tanners on offense. Catherine Manning, Kelly Crotty, Alyssa Shashaty and Carla Patania turned in strong efforts on the defensive side. Netminder Gianna Denisco denied nine Beverly shots, including two in the second overtime period. The Tanners are now 7-2.

BOYS TENNIS

Somerville 3, Classical 2

Moses Ba got a win at second singles, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. The doubles pair of Stephen Ong and Gerry Ennis won its match, 6-0, 6-1. Classical is now 5-2 this season and has a match today against English, weather permitting. “The kids fought really hard,” Rams coach Chris Hayward said. “A couple points here and there and it could’ve been our match. Both teams played really well.”

Winthrop 4, Medford 1

Arthur Borash got the win at second singles, 6-2, 6-2. The pair of Matt Tarantino and Chris Page won its match 6-3, 7-5. The Vikings (7-2) are back on Monday at Swampscott.

Arlington Catholic 3, St. Mary’s 2

The Spartans received winning performances from Brady Ryan, 6-0, 6-0, and Matthew Gallego, 6-2, 6-2. St. Mary’s is now 0-8 on the season.

St. John’s 4, Pentucket 1

At St. John’s, the Eagles (7-1) got singles wins from No. 2 Jacob Silacci (6-0, 6-1) and No. 3 Mike Prokopis (6-0, 6-2).

The Eagles swept the doubles matches, with David Cunningham and Amol Raisingani (6-4, 3-6) and Jack Malowepiszy and Jason Xu (6-0, 6-2) winning.

St. John’s is at BC High Monday with a chance not only to avenge its only loss, but to play for a share of the Catholic Conference title.

GIRLS TENNIS

Fenwick 5, St. Mary’s 0

Fenwick’s (7-4) Kerry Kircher defeated Nina Nirolakopoulos, 6-0, 6-1, and Taylor Botthof defeated Taylor Hogan, 6-0, 6-0. Fenwick’s Brenna Waldinger defeated Katia Dicostanzo 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play, the team of Tiana Iuliano and Sarah Blessington defeated Maddy Desmond and Kayla Magwood 6-3, 6-1 and the pair of Faith Harding and Maria O’Donald defeated Caitlyn Foley and Hannah Bates 6-0, 6-1.

BOYS TRACK

Swampscott 114, Saugus 17

Dymond Clark was a triple-winner for the Big Blue notching victories the 200 meter, the high jump and the triple jump. Aidan Pulaski won the 400 meter hurdles, Pat Doucette won the two-mile in 11 minutes and 24 seconds, Evan Lippman won the mile in 5:14, Joe Varghese won the 110 meter hurdles, Devin Denham won the 400, Thomas McDevitt won the 800, Zack Palmer won the long jump with a distance of 18 feet and 9.5 inches, Alex Sheehan won the shotput with a distance of 38 feet and 11.5 inches, Mac Midland won the discus with 121 feet and nine inches, Jake Culliton won the javelin with a throw of 143 feet and seven inches. Swampscott improves to 3-2 and hosts Lynn English on Wednesday. Kyle Lennan, in the 100 meter, was the lone winner for Saugus.

GIRLS TRACK

Swampscott 79, Saugus 57

Winners for the Big Blue (5-0) were Maisie Vasquez (shot put, discus), Rebecca Price (javelin), Ella Parker (400 meter hurdles, 800), Caroline Kinne (one mile) and the team of Alex Gladstone, Skye Bascon, Alex Hartmann and Catie Cullinane in the 4×100. Winners for Saugus were Hayley Dennis in the 100 meter, Gianna Filaretos in the 110 hurdles, Kiley Ronan in the 400 meter and the team 4×400 team of Shay Groark, Jada Okoye, Jenni Costa and Ronan. Field events winners were Ronan in the long jump and Filaretos in the high and triple jumps.
