Three Lynn students were awarded scholarships for their plans to pursue careers in the health and science field.
Alaina Gridley of Lynn Classical, Kylie Moorehouse of Lynn English and Ashley Pimental of Lynn Tech received the Richard and Ellen Penley Health and Science Scholarship.
The $2,500 scholarship has been awarded to students who plan to study healthy, science, or a related field in college since 2008.
Penley and his cousin, Donna McInerney, are involved in the selection process for the scholarship in memory of his wife, Ellen Farmer Penley, a 1961 English graduate who died of ALS in 2005.
“There are some very bright kids who apply every year,” Penley said. “We always have a difficult time selecting, but we came up with three deserving winners.”
Gridley will attend Salem State University and study nursing. Moorehouse is headed to the Mass. College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to major in pre-med with a physician’s assistant track. Pimentel is going to Saint Anselm College and will major in chemistry.
The other criteria for the scholarship include academics, financial need, and community service.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Catherine C. Latham, thanked Penley for the continued generosity to the students of Lynn.
“We are extremely grateful to have this scholarship available to our students,” said Latham, who hosted the scholarship recipients, Penley and McInerney, principals and guidance counselors from all public high schools in Lynn.
“There is a growing demand for skilled professionals in health and sciences. The scholarships from the Penleys have a significant impact on the students who receive them.”
