The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) and officials from Malden, Medford and Everett are developing a vision for the Malden River’s future. Now they want to see what residents envision along the waterway, too.
The second of three public meetings for the Malden River Greenway Vision Plan will be Tuesday, August 8 at the River’s Edge and Tufts Boathouse at 6:30 p.m. in Medford.
The association is “working to create a shared vision for a seamless waterfront park system along both sides of the Malden River,” according to the MyRWA website. Currently, a little more than a mile of the 3.5 miles of river shoreline is accessible green space. The rest has been private industrial properties.
“Thanks to local leadership and several brownfield redevelopments, the Malden River is on its way to becoming a central open space amenity for all three cities,” MyRWA wrote.
The August 8 meeting is one of several sessions planned throughout the year. At these meetings, nonprofits, city officials, local developers, business owners and citizens will create what MyRWA called a comprehensive vision for a series of connected parklands along the river.
Once all the input is collected, design consulting company Utile will create a master plan and recommendations for new parks, paths, and amenities along the Malden River. Other ideas for the riverside include a public boathouse, docks and a pedestrian bridge across the river midway between the Medford Street bridge and the Route 16 bridge.
This Malden River greenway study project is a partnership between the Mystic River Watershed Association; Everett; Malden; Medford; Bike to the Sea; Friends of the Malden River; the Lawrence and Lillian Solomon Foundation (A Greener and Greater Boston); Preotle; Lane and Associates; and Wynn Boston Harbor.
