REVERE — The race for city council is on with a dozen candidates running for five at-large positions and two vying for a seat in each ward.
The council passed a resolution last week, which was signed by Mayor Brian Arrigo, to eliminate the preliminary election scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 12, said Joe Gravellese, aide to the mayor. The city is waiting on state approval.
Should it pass at the state level, 12 names will appear on the ballot for the councilor at large race, in addition to two in each ward, and nine for six school committee seats.
At-large incumbents Jessica Ann Giannino, Steven Morabito, George J. Rotondo, and Anthony T. Zambuto are seeking reelection. The seat of Robert J. Haas, Jr., an at-large city council member who died unexpectedly in July, will also be filled.
Todd A. Braid, Nicholas Moulaison, Sr., David Jose Ramos, Dimple J. Rana, Wayne Rose, Michael Zaccaria, John R. Correggio, and Daniel Rizzo are also running.
Rizzo served on the city council for 12 years and as mayor for four years beginning in 2011. Correggio served on the council from 2006 to 2015. Before that, he was on the Revere School Committee for six years.
“I believe the city needs a change,” said Correggio, a retired fire lieutenant who plans to base much of his campaign on public safety. “I don’t like the direction the city is going in right now.”
In Ward 1, incumbent Joanne McKenna will run against Cheryl Whittredge. In Ward 2, Ira Novoselsky will run against challenger Sebastian Giuseppe Mancuso. Incumbent Arthur F. Guinasso will be challenged by Anthony Saverio Cogliandro in Ward 3. Patrick M. Keefe, Jr. will run against newby Philip Joseph Russo in Ward 4. Ward 5 incumbent John Powers’ seat will be challenged by Eric Lampedecchio. In Ward 6, Arthur Henry DeMattia will challenge incumbent Charles J. Patch, Sr.
School Committee members Michael A. Ferrante, Susan J. Gravellese, Stacey A. Rizzo, Frederick A. Sannella, and Carol A. Tye are seeking reelection. Current member Dan Maguire will not run.
Glenn P. Lacedra, Stephen F. Reardon, Albert J. Terminiello, and Gerry Visconti are also seeking a seat on the board.
Each position is a two-year term.
The deadline to file an objection and for candidates to withdraw their nomination papers is Thursday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m., said elections commissioner Diane Colella. Residents should register to vote in the local election by Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.
