LYNN — Forty-five years ago with a dream and a fresh high school diploma in hand, Donna Estes opened Donna’s Dance Studio.
The dance school, which moved from Swampscott to Lynn three decades ago, has since turned thousands of children into dancers and countless strangers into friends.
“We’re going through generations now,” said Estes. “So many of my students now are bringing their children in (for classes). I’ve met so many people and made so many great friends. These kids stay together. They’re in each others’ weddings. Their kids are in play groups together. I’m so proud.”
In a small studio on Bessom Street, Estes teaches ballet, tap, jazz, Irish step dancing, hip hop, and gymnastics to more than 200 people each year in class sizes that cap off at 12 people. Her youngest students are three years old. Many of the students who began dancing with her as toddlers work with her as staff members today.
Before opening her own business at the age of 18, just four months after graduating from Lynn English High School, Estes volunteered at the Gregg House and the Girl’s Club teaching dance.
“I’ve found a way to combine my love for kids and my love for dance,” she said.
As a child, she was inspired by her mother, Grace (Derby) Moholland, a dancer who performed in live shows at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Lynn. Moholland’s father, Charles Derby, played the harmonica and autoharp. She prides herself on coming from a long line of performers.
In honor of the studio’s 45th year, Estes will feature songs from the school’s biggest shows to date, including “New York, New York,” “42nd Street,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Class registration and an open house will be held Aug. 15 and 17 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
