Problem with posting for Saugus open athletic director job

August 4, 2017 by Bridget Turcotte

SAUGUS — School Committee members will address a hiccup in the hiring process of a new athletic director.

Tuesday night’s discussion will focus on an error with the job posting that listed the incorrect salary and hours for the position.

Earlier in the year, committee members voted on a budget that included a part-time athletic director. The position had been reduced to half time in 2014 as part of $2 million in budget cuts. At the time, the job was held by Robert O’Leary. His responsibilities were placed on then-vice-principal and former athletic director Michael Nelson.

The open position was incorrectly advertised by the School Department as full time although there is only $47,000 in the budget to fund it’s salary, said chairwoman Jeannie Meredith. Several candidates applied and were interviewed by a seven-person hiring committee on two separate days last month, including committee member Elizabeth Marchese.

“They already held the interviews and then we all realized it’s not in the budget for full time,” she said.

The School Committee does not have the authority to hire an athletic director, and specific candidates will not be discussed at the meeting, said Meredith.

Previously, the salary for the full-time athletic director was $72,000, Meredith said. The committee will discuss whether they can find the money elsewhere in the budget to fund a full time position, or whether they need to repost the job as part-time with a lesser salary.
